Job Description
General Purpose The major functions of the VP Operations are to support and assist the President in providing leadership and direction for UMH Sparrow Lansing Hospital (UMHSL), ensuring that quality, financial accountability, compassionate care, service growth and patient experience is provided to the patients and customers throughout the assigned areas of responsibility. Areas of responsibility may include all non-centralized support services, contracted clinical services, Radiology, Behavioral Health, Laboratory, security and patient experience. Supporting the President of UMH Sparrow Lansing Hospital, the VP Operations l is responsible for producing desired results associated with patient experience, clinical outcomes, financial integrity of Hospital operations, , ) and the growth of services to best meet the needs of the community. The VP Operations will provide leadership in the development, implementation and oversight of standards, systems, policies and procedures in alignment with organization strategic initiatives. Directs and ensures the effective identification, recruitment, development and maintenance of talent for current and future organization needs in order to achieve goals and objectives. Responsible for setting clear expectations, promotes teamwork and holds leadership accountable for desired outcomes. In collaboration with Hospital President, provides, leadership and actively participates in the development and implementation of strategic and tactical programs and operational planning. In the absence of the Hospital President, may assume leadership of the Hospital. The VP Operations may serve as a member of the board of directors of assigned affiliates and subsidiaries, and/or community organizations. Works collaboratively with other members of the Hospital executive team including but not limited to Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Medical Officer Essential Duties Leadership/Governance
- Provide leadership and direction for designated departments, services lines, and affiliates.
- Participate with the executive team, governing board, and medical staff in planning the future direction of the Hospital in a manner which is consistent with the organizational mission, community need, and economic solvency.
- Provide leadership in implementing the Hospital's long-range strategic plan consistent with annual operating and capital plans.
- Assist the President in the coordination of effort between the medical staff leaders, administrative staff, and team members.
- Participate in Hospital goal creation and overall coordination to ensure execution of goals.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies, and the rules of accrediting bodies by continually monitoring the operations and care environments and initiating changes where appropriate.
Management
- Develop an organizational climate and culture which is consistent with the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
- Ensure that assigned areas of responsibility provide quality, compassionate, and cost-effective health care services.
- Develop a capable team of department Directors.
- Participate in fundraising efforts as assigned.
- Provide assistance to supervisory personnel in establishing departmental role statements and objectives; determining staffing needs and standards of productivity; establishing procedures and systems and appropriate job classifications; and complying with federal, state, and local codes, regulations, and ordinances.
- Ensure consistent processes across Hospital through benchmarking, best practices, communication, and collaboration.
- Provide for Leader and Caregiver development through training, performance management, and succession planning in collaboration with Human Resources.
Financial Responsibility
- Maintain financial viability of Hospital Operations through growth strategies, cost management, and staffing management.
- Oversee capital planning, allocation, and business plans to produce return on investment for areas of responsibility.
- Ensure that all regulatory and compliance requirements are met in all areas of responsibility.
- Manage finances including budgeting, salary and non-salary expenses.
- Ensure that Hospital operational targets are achieved.
Talent Management
- Coaches and develops leaders leading to enhanced performance outcomes.
- In collaboration with Hospital President, sets goals and objectives for Hospital-allocates and/or redirects necessary resources to achieve goals-holds leadership of areas of responsibility responsible for achieving agreed upon goals
- Maintains on going communication with Caregivers ensuring strategic direction is known and periodic progress reports are shared for areas of responsibility.
- Creates an environment of high caregiver and physician engagement resulting in exemplary employment retention.
- Serves as UMH Sparrow Lansing primary liaison to external contracted entities as assigned.
- Encourage the integration of the Hospital with the communities served through effective communication, active involvement, and positive public relations.
- Maintain professional affiliations and enhance professional growth and development by keeping abreast of the latest trends in health care policy, administration, delivery, and financing.
External
- Serves as UMH Sparrow Lansing primary liaison to external contracted entities as assigned.
- Encourage the integration of the Hospital with the communities served through effective communication, active involvement, and positive public relations.
- Maintain professional affiliations and enhance professional growth and development by keeping abreast of the latest trends in health care policy, administration, delivery, and financing.
Job Requirements
| Work Experience |
* Minimum of 7 years of progressively more responsible leadership positions, with at least 5 years in an executive role. * Proven track record of change management and process improvement. |
| Education |
* Master's degree in business or related field. |
| Specialized Knowledge and Skills |
* Strong leader with proven ability to plan, organize, coordinate, communicate, and collaborate. * Demonstrated excellent communication skills (listening, writing, and speaking) with ability to communicate concepts in a manner that can be easily understood. * Demonstrated knowledge of strategic planning, regulations, laws and corporate compliance issues. * Leadership style consistent with UMH Sparrow Lansing organizational values of excellence, service, people, responsibility, innovation, and teamwork. * Demonstrate a strong track record of developing and maintaining collaborative relationships among diverse groups, medical staff, as well as key external stakeholders. * The ability to work collaboratively with the leadership across University of Michigan Health. |
