Overview

The Genetic Counselor I functions as a remote-based member of the Patient Education Team (PET) within the Medical Services department. The main role involves interacting with patients and supporting teammates.

Schedule: This position is full time, day time hours Monday through Friday. The actual shift that the team member plans to work is flexible but requires working pacific time closing hours (3-5pm PST). This position is a US based remote position.

Responsibility

This position requires a majority of time on patient pre and post-test education interactions and may include opportunities to work on special projects. Occasional travel may be required in support of patient education, training or other corporate-related activities. Genetic Counselors are expected to be consistently available to communicate with patients during their scheduled shifts. Essential duties of the position include:

  1. Client Support:
    1. Patient interactions for pre and post-test education is the core responsibility of the Genetic Counselor role.
    2. Interacts with patients pre and post-test for patient education regarding aspects of commercial Myriad One products supported by the PET (i.e. myRisk, Foresight, etc.). This may include national guideline criteria reviews, interpretation of results, and discussion of medical management.
    3. There is an expectation of excellence in the quality and efficiency in the interactions.
    4. The Genetic Counselor will be required to meet individual and/or team goals and expectations.
    5. Continued focus on optimizing patient interactions through best practice sharing, participation in meetings and coaching programs.
  2. Clinical Knowledge:
    1. Maintains current clinical knowledge for Myriad products supported by the Patient Education Team.
    2. Understands major data sources and critically evaluates journal articles, published reports, clinical trials, MGL internal data, etc. relative to the use of Myriad's commercial products.
    3. Maintains CE requirements for relevant certifications/licenses.
  3. Internal Support:
    1. Opportunities to participate in inter and intra-departmental and team projects may be available.
    2. Special projects may include a variety of the following: assisting in the creation, editing and review of training material, marketing collateral, protocols, website content, SOPs and other written material for internal and external projects.
  4. Administrative:
    1. Manages time and expense budget.
    2. Accurately documents patient interactions.
    3. Assesses need for communication with internal teams, clinics, AEs, SAMs and/or RMSs.
    4. Keeps up to date on all SOP tasks and maintains a high level of understanding of internal processes and protocols.
    5. Accesses and updates all relevant databases/applications in an appropriate and effective manner.
    6. Pursues and maintains genetic counselor licensure in multiple states, as required.
  5. Organizational Interaction:
    1. Opportunities to participate in research studies may be available.
    2. Interacts as needed with other departments within Myriad (e.g., Sales, Marketing, Medical Affairs, Managed Care, Operations, Technical Development) as a clinical resource in educational and scientific support, to benefit the patient and future development of the company.

Qualifications

  1. Master's degree from an accredited Genetic Counseling program.
  2. American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) Certified.
  3. Appropriate genetic counseling state licensure is required.
  4. Professional and detail oriented.
  5. Excellent communication (written and oral) and teamwork skills.
  6. HIPAA compliant home office space with a high-speed ethernet connection.

Physical Requirements

Lifting Requirements - light work or exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently.

Physical Requirements - While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to listen and communicate verbally and in writing with patients pre- and post-test for patient education regarding aspects of commercial Myriad One products.

Use of equipment and tools - Genetic Counselors must be able to complete administrative work and documentation of patient/provider interactions on a variety of software applications and databases with or without a reasonable accommodation.
