About the Job

Duration: until 6/1/2026, with the possibility of extension
Preferred Start: ASAP
Salary range: $20/hour
Commitment: This position will be part-time, no more than 14 hours per week
Location: The work for this position is hybrid, with some meetings and work in person.
Primary Supervisor: Amna A. Akbar

A Research Assistant position is open within Professor Amna A. Akbar at the University of Minnesota Law School. This position will support research projects related to law and organizing; democracy and the court; and theories of state and law. Tasks will include academic research and research of law and organizing campaigns; work products will include research memos and literature reviews.

This position will be supervised by Amna A. Akbar, the Benjamin N. Berger Professor in Criminal Law.

Open communication, innovation, and collaboration are valued. Individualized mentorship will be provided, with attention on career development and growth.

The specific responsibilities of the position may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Researching contemporary law and organizing campaigns with attention to the strategies and tactics of the movements in which they are embedded as well as impact;
  • Researching the development of courts over the 20th into the 21st century with attention to their function with statecraft in the United States
  • Researching critical legal scholarship in its past and present forms

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in political science, history, sociology or a related degree.
  • Candidates should have a background or potential for research including strong writing skills.
  • Applicants should be highly motivated with an ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $20.00 per hour
