Essential Job Duties |
The
Omega Transitional Care Technician plays a vital role in supporting patients, clients, and clinicians within NC State's End of Life Care Service. This position provides compassionate and skilled technical support for in-hospital and in-home consultations, including patient assessments, treatments, and client education. The technician will assist veterinarians with examinations, pain management, mobility support, and palliative and hospice care, while helping clients navigate the emotional aspects of terminal illness and loss with empathy and professionalism.
In addition, the role provides secondary support to the Small Animal Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine Service and contributes to teaching fourth-year veterinary students and clients about palliative medicine and hospice care techniques. Success in this position requires a calm, compassionate approach; excellent communication and teamwork skills; the ability to lift 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations, and the ability to adapt to a fast-paced, emotionally sensitive environment while maintaining the highest standards of patient care and client service.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians with examinations, treatments, animal handling, and patient assessments.
- Provide quality of life evaluations and patient progress updates for in-hospital and in-home consultations.
- Educate and support clients in pain management, mobility, rehabilitation, nutrition, and end-of-life decision-making.
- Maintain accurate medical records and ensure clear communication with other hospital departments and ancillary services.
- Support teaching efforts for fourth-year veterinary students, interns, and residents on palliative and hospice care techniques.
- Maintain compliance with hospital safety, infection control, and operational standards.

- Performs other duties as assigned to support the mission and goals of the NC State Veterinary Hospital.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education |
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Previous veterinary technician experience in a clinical setting
- Demonstrated experience in small animal clinical practice, with emphasis on palliative or end-of-life care.
- Proficiency in technical procedures including venipuncture, medication and sedation administration, drug calculations, and low-stress animal handling.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to provide empathetic client support.
- Certifications such as Fear Free, Companion Animal Euthanasia Training Academy (CAETA), or Certified Peaceful Euthanasia Professional (CPEP) are strongly preferred.
