Carolina Community Academy (
CCA) is an innovative school for K-2 students at North Elementary School in Roxboro, N.C. A partnership between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Person County Schools,

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The School of Education is an academic unit reporting to the Provost. The School is a major center of research, teaching, and public service within the State of North Carolina, the nation, and the world. The mission of the School of Education is to conduct research, and generate basic and applied knowledge about human development, educational technology and entrepreneurship, teaching and learning, school counseling, school psychology, administration, as well as educational policy and leadership; prepare leaders in the profession of education by conducting outstanding research, teaching, and service; and assist in the development of strong and effective public schools in North Carolina.
The Carolina Community Academy is a laboratory school that has been created as specified in North Carolina General Statutes (
NCGS) Chapter 116, Article 29A, with the goal of improving student performance in the partner school district by providing an enhanced education program and providing exposure and training for teachers and principals to address challenges existing in a high-needs school setting. The Academy is one of six lab schools identified to partner directly with local school districts to promote evidence-based teaching and school leadership, while offering real-world experience to the next generation of teachers and principals.
UNC System lab schools will serve every part of the
UNC System mission teaching, research, and public service.
UNC-Chapel Hill has partnered with Person County Schools to establish the Carolina Community Academy, which is located within North Elementary School in Roxboro, NC. The
UNC Chapel Hill Carolina Community Academy is rooted in the stance that education has the power to break down barriers, lift up individuals, and empower communities to rise and thrive. The Academy engages the local and University community, inspires its educators to lead and act with passion, prepares students to be critical and creative thinkers, and strives for equity for all. The Academy includes classes at kindergarten through 2nd grade.

Position Summary |
The English Learner (EL) Tutor plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students. S/he provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. The EL Tutor is also responsible for supervising students in a variety of school related settings; monitoring and evaluating student outcomes; and communicating/interacting with students, parents, staff and the community. The EL Tutor must develop, select and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Additionally, the EL Tutor is responsible for maintaining appropriate records and following required procedures and practices as well as monitoring the appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.
This temporary position at the Carolina Community Academy reports to the Principal of Carolina Community Academy. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |

DUTIES
AND
RESPONSIBILITIES
* Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the needs, interests and abilities of students
* On a regular and consistent basis, meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
* Create a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enable each student to achieve learning objectives
* Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all identified EL students
* Prepare for classes assigned, and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor
* Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals
* Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, etc. in order to communicate these objectives effectively to students
* Establish learning objectives consistent with appraisal of student needs, requirements of curriculum framework and knowledge of human growth and development
* Plan for and utilize instructional methods, resources and evaluation techniques that motivate and enable each student to achieve learning objectives
* Take all necessary and permitted safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
* Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law,
CCA policy,
NCDPI and administrative regulations
* Assist with the administration of implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
* Make provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms
* Establish relationships with colleagues, students, parent and community that reflect recognition and respect of every individual
* Administer and supervise standardized test administrations in accordance with all applicable Code of Ethics, Testing Code of Ethics,
NCDPI, and/or national standards and regulations |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Experience providing EL services in the K-5 setting. |

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities |
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities. |
