Assistant Airport Maintenance Supervisor


Milwaukee County General Mitchell International Airport
Hourly Pay Range: $32.21 - $37.41



Job Summary: Plan, assign, direct, and coordinate the general maintenance activities at two County-owned Airports. This includes maintenance of grounds, buildings, equipment, fixtures, and facilities. Direct and monitor snow removal operations with a staff of up to 80 maintenance employees. Ensure safe and efficient maintenance operations. Motivate and discipline employees to comply to work rules and policies. This position will work first shift five days a week, with overtime required during emergencies and snow removal operations while needing to remain on call.



Essential Responsibilities:




  • Direct and supervise the activities of the Airport Maintenance Dept - Direct and supervise the activities of the Airport Maintenance Dept in the care and upkeep of buildings, airfield, grounds, and equipment including but not limited to the prioritization and assignment of work requests, assigning personnel and allocating resources.


  • Personnel Supervision - Directly supervise the work of the Airport Maintenance Workers, Airport Maintenance Worker In-Charges, and Seasonal Workers. Administer personnel issues relative to the hiring, training, scheduling, motivating, evaluating, and disciplining of employees.


  • Implement and ensure compliance with policies and procedures - Ensure compliance with Federal, State, County, and Airport policies, procedures, rules, regulations, & ordinances. Recommend improvements as necessary for the safety and protection of County property & personnel, and patrons.


  • Recommend purchases -Recommend the purchase of equipment, materials and supplies.


  • Plan, prepare for, participate in, & lead airport snow removal ops - Plan, prepare for, participate in, and lead airport snow & ice control operations. Using specialized airport snow removal equipment, clear snow from airside pavement (runway, taxiway, aprons, etc.) and landside (roads, sidewalks, etc.) through the use of plowing, sweeping, airport deicer chemical application, and other equipment as needed.


  • Assist in development and preparation in a preventative maintenance program - Assist in the development, preparation, and implementation of a preventative maintenance plan to ensure compliance with FAA part 139 certification of airports of a safe airfield and airport.


  • All Other Duties - Meet with stakeholders/customers - 2%; respond to various emergencies and assume appropriate emergency role - 1%; represent the Airport Maintenance Supervisor in his/her absence - 1%; other duties as assigned - 1%



Minimum Requirements:



  • Current resident of Wisconsin
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver's License
  • High School Diploma
  • At least (3) Three years of experience in facilities and grounds (field, building, & general maintenance) work highly desired. Experience with snow removal operations at a medium or large hub airport preferred. Experience at a commercial service (14CFR Part 139 certificated) airport, or equivalent military facility is preferred.
  • Must have, good eyesight, hearing and physical ability. Able to work long hours during emergency situations and in adverse weather conditions. Class 1 Airfield Driving must be obtained within 6 months of hire, and recertification must take place every calendar year for duration of employment at the Airport.



Licenses/Certifications:



  • GMIA Class 1 Airfield license required within 6 months and maintained
  • (CDL) Commercial Driver's License-Class B with air brake endorsement required at the time of application.
  • Obtain within 6 months upon hire and maintain throughout employment - Class 1 Airfield Driving Certification
  • AAAE/ACI/IFMA certifications preferred



Note: This Original Examination is open to current residents of the State of Wisconsin. In accordance with Rule III section 11 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of a review of candidate materials, education and related experience.
