The job duties include:
- Answering emergency (9-1-1) and non-emergency telephone lines
- Obtaining information, prioritizing, and confirming the location of calls as well as making independent determination of appropriate action for processing all incoming calls for service
- Relaying pertinent information to the appropriate public safety response unit (police, fire, and/or emergency medical services/EMS) or providing callers with the appropriate advice or referral
- Operating and monitoring two-way radio channels, computer aided display (CAD) monitors and other related sophisticated communications equipment systems, while efficiently gathering, prioritizing, and documenting caller information.

Minimum Experience/Education |
High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Requires certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or the ability to achieve certification within 45 days of employment. Some positions may require Basic Telecommunicator Certification in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. |
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education |
- Successful completion of all modules to the SBI/DCI course of study.
- The employee must pass an in-depth background investigation as required by the State of North Carolina for access to the SBI/DCI system.
- At least five years of work experience involving the use of computers, and preferably in an environment requiring extensive public contact.

Required License or Certification |
- Employee must attain and maintain certification on all modules of the SBI/CDI system, including periodic re-examination as mandated by state law.
- Must take annual in-service training for telecommunicators (state requirements).
- Be able to pass the Sheriff's Standards Telecommunications course within 1 year from hire date.
