Areas of expertise are open to all subfields of political science, including American politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, public administration, and public policy. Candidates whose work intersects with civic engagement, democratic participation, or applied politics are especially encouraged to apply.

Description of the Department or Unit
The Department of Government and Justice Studies ( GJS) is home to over 900 undergraduate majors in criminal justice and political science and over 60 graduate students in political science and public administration. It has more than 30 full-time faculty who are at the forefront of their diverse areas of expertise and are amongst the most honored teachers at Appalachian State University. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This distinguished position is open to established scholars with an exemplary record of mentoring students, innovative teaching, and/or civic and community engagement.. The appointment will begin in August 2026, though the start date is negotiable.

  • Teach 2-3 courses per semester, with opportunities to develop new courses that reflect the scholar's expertise and complement departmental offerings.
  • Mentor students in research, internships, and community-engaged projects.
  • Collaborate with faculty to design programming that enriches the intellectual life of the department and university.
  • Use endowed funds to support activities such as:

    • Hosting public lectures, panels, or workshops.
    • Supporting student research or travel.
    • Developing civic engagement initiatives in partnership with local or regional organizations.

Suggested Salary Range Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
ABD Consideration: N/A - ABD is not applicable for this position. See Minimum Qualifications.
ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
