TSC is seeking a Mechanical Technician (II) in Huntsville, AL. This position will support the TSC Products Engineering Solutions (PES).

TSC offers a professional working environment, a competitive salary, and an excellent benefits package. Come and join our team!

Responsibilities:

This position requires a flexible individual with experience in quick-turn electro-mechanical development of product concepts to working prototypes within limited timelines & guidance. The ideal candidate:

Assembly, Integration & Rework

  • Assemble electro-mechanical modules, chassis, brackets, and enclosures; install fasteners, inserts (Helicoils/PEMs), standoffs, and hardware to spec.
  • Install RF components (connectors, filters, cables, waveguide), electronics (PCBs, modules, harnesses), seals/gaskets, and thermal interface materials (TIMs, pads, pastes).
  • Perform mechanical rework and modifications (drill/tap/deburr, slot/clearance, light mill/lathe ops, file/fit, epoxy/adhesive bonding) with strong workmanship and finish.
  • Route, dress, and secure cabling/harnesses; apply strain relief, heat-shrink, lacing/tying, and EMI/EMC gasketing per guidance.
  • Apply threadlocking, torque, and sequencing practices; build to work instructions and drawings, logging as-built conditions.

CAD & Build Tooling

  • Create basic 3D models for shop aids and simple parts (e.g., drill templates, brackets, shims, caps/guards).
  • Design and iterate fixtures/jigs for assembly, test, and environmental setups (with engineer review).
  • Open, view, and update 2D drawings for minor edits: hole callouts, BOM tweaks, finish notes, and redline incorporation.
  • Export STEP/DXF, create simple exploded views, and add callouts to support work instructions.
  • Use CAD to confirm fit/clearances, pull dimensions, and generate quick prints for the bench.

RF-Aware Handling & Test Support

  • Handle RF connectors (SMA, TNC, N-Type, SMPM, etc.) using proper torque tools and cleanliness practices.
  • Terminate/co-form coax (semi-rigid, RG-316, etc.) with the correct dies and crimp tools; continuity checks and label/ID.
  • Support basic RF/mechanical test setups (fit/clearance, continuity, DC power-on, fixture assembly; assist with VNA/spectrum analyzer setups under engineer guidance).
  • Prepare hardware for environmental tests (thermal, vibe, shock) and execute pre/post-test inspections and re-torque.

Prototyping & Shop Practices

  • Operate common shop equipment: drill press, band saw, arbor press, hand tools, torque wrenches, taps/dies, rivet tools; light manual mill/lathe preferred.
  • 3D-print operation for fixtures/caps/guards; light finishing and fit-verification.
  • Mix/apply potting/encapsulants, conformal coat masking; gasket cutting; adhesive bonding with precise bond-line control.

Documentation & Quality

  • Interpret mechanical drawings, notes, GD&T callouts (read/understand); record build data, serials, and nonconformances; mark up redlines and ECO feedback.
  • Create/maintain work instructions, build travelers, and as-built photos.
  • Follow ESD, FOD, and lab safety; maintain organized benches, kitting, and consumables.

Collaboration

  • Work shoulder-to-shoulder with RF, EE, and ME teams during rapid builds and quick-turn iterations.
  • Coordinate with buyers/vendors for hardware, cut-lengths, and coatings; support receiving inspection (spot checks, count/ID).

Required Qualifications:

  • HS diploma/GED and 3+ years electro-mechanical assembly experience (defense/aero, RF, or industrial preferred).
  • Proficiency with precision hand tools, torque control, inserts/fasteners, cable dressing, and ESD discipline.
  • Ability to read drawings and measure parts (calipers, micrometers, height gauge).
  • Basic CAD competency in SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar:
    • Create/edit simple parts (plates, brackets, spacers, drill guides).
    • Update basic drawings (dimensions/notes/BOM) using templates.
    • Generate STEP/DXF and markups for work instructions.
  • Strong communication, ownership of quality records, and comfort in fast, iterative builds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AS in Engineering Technology or similar.
  • RF familiarity: connector torque specs, coax termination (semi-rigid/RG-316), cleanliness; assist with VNA/spectrum analyzer setups.
  • Environmental test support (fixture install, hardware prep, post-test inspection).
  • Light machine-shop skills (manual mill/lathe), sheet-metal fit-up, and 3D-print operation/finishing.
  • Experience with TIMs, EMI gaskets, potting/encapsulation, conformal-coat masking, and paint/finish touch-ups.
  • Configuration control basics (ECOs, redlines, revision tracking).

Good communication skills and intellectual flexibility is essential for success as our challenges, schedules, and deliverables are ever-changing. We work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and dynamic missions. We develop unique RF technologies and get to play with very cool toys
