I. JOB OVERVIEW






Job Description Summary:
The Division for Student Affairs cultivates an inclusive community that supports connection, growth, and well-being for every student throughout their GW journey. Within DSA, The Student Health Center ( SHC) provides affordable, high-quality medical care to eligible GW students. SHC offers a range of confidential health services to support medical and mental health needs, as well as prevention services to guide students in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The Associate Director, Medical Services serves as the lead Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner responsible for providing patient care and has a key leadership role responsible for overseeing clinical operations, ensuring high-quality patient care, supporting the professional development of healthcare staff, and ensuring medical outreach coordination. As a Nurse Practitioner, the Associate Director will provide direct patient care, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and contribute to the strategic planning and implementation of health services. The Associate Director acts on behalf of the Medical Director in clinical and administrative decision-making in the absence of the Director.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

Clinical Leadership:

  • Provide clinical oversight and leadership to the nurse practitioner staff, including per diem nurse practitioners, the nursing staff and ancillary clinical staff (medical assistant and phlebotomist). Manages the nursing segment of clinical operations, including nursing staff, nurse practitioner (NP) staff, and per diem NP staff.
  • Holds direct responsibility for staff evaluations, performance management, and personnel decisions.
  • May serve as a designated hiring authority for nursing and NP staff as assigned.
  • Ensure adherence to evidence-based practices and clinical guidelines.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of clinical protocols and policies.
  • Oversee the coordination of preceptorships for GWU School of Nursing students.
  • Collaborates with Student Health Center (SHC) Directors (CAPS/Medical/Administrative) to develop and implement departmental goals and strategies.
  • Serves as deputy to the Medical Director, exercising independent decision-making authority in the Director's absence.


Patient Care:

  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, diagnose and treat acute and chronic conditions, and prescribe medications as needed.
  • Provide patient education and counseling on health maintenance and disease prevention.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care and ensure continuity of services.

Administrative Duties:

  • Assist the Medical Director in the management of clinical operations, including staffing and resource allocation.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and monitor clinical performance metrics.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of health center policies and procedures.
  • Assist the Medical Director in oversight of the Enrollment Immunization Policy, Tuberculosis Screening and staff immunization compliance.
  • Assist Medical Director in weekly team meetings.

Professional Development:

  • Mentor and support the professional growth of healthcare staff through training, supervision, and performance evaluations.
  • Stay current with advancements in medical practice and healthcare delivery.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the health center.

Community Engagement:

  • Represent the health center in the Division for Student Affairs and other university and community meetings and events.
  • Collaborate with university departments and external organizations to enhance health services and programs.
  • Leads medical outreach initiatives and represents SHC Medical in cross-campus collaborations with Health Promotion and other university partners.
  • Advocate for the health and well-being of the university community.
  • As the medical provider in charge of outreach, collaborate with the CAPS outreach coordinator as well as other campus and community partners like Health Promotion to foster student well-being.
  • Represents SHC on university-wide committees and task forces.

This position may perform other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 4 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited program is desired.
  • Current Nurse Practitioner license with the ability to care for adolescent and adult patients and certification in Washington, D.C. is preferred.

  • DEA and Controlled Substance certification in Washington, D.C., or willingness to obtain such certification by the start date, is desired.
  • Experience providing medical telehealth services is preferred.
  • 5+ years of clinical experience as an advanced practice provider, with at least 2 years in a leadership role, is desired.
  • Strong clinical skills and knowledge of evidence-based practices are preferred.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience using an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) is desired.
  • Software proficiency or willingness and ability to learn new operating systems and technologies is preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Hiring Range $104,536.21 - $181,822.55
