Department Description

The Zhao Lab at UCSF (Department of Bioengineering & Therapeutic Sciences / School of Pharmacy) is dedicated to advancing drug development and regulatory science through state-of-the-art quantitative modeling, simulation, and artificial intelligence. Under the leadership of Dr. Liang Zhao (a former FDA quantitative methods lead), our group develops mechanistic, population, and AI-driven models that influence regulatory decisions, support generic drug development, and integrate real-world evidence approaches. Our research spans pharmacometrics, physiologically based pharmacokinetics, regulatory-grade evidence generation, and the intersection of AI/machine learning with drug development. The lab fosters a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment where computational scientists, pharmacologists, and regulatory researchers work together to bridge methodological innovation and real-world impact.
