Description

ALEX - Alternative Experts is seeking a Senior Paralegal to support the U.S. Attorney's Office in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The successful candidate will assist Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) in preparing for trial and managing legal documentation for criminal and civil cases. This role requires strong organizational skills, legal research capabilities, and experience with litigation support tools.

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Review case files and documents to identify pertinent material and legal issues.
  • Compile, index, and organize legal information and sources.
  • Assist in trial preparation by organizing and marking trial documents and drafting exhibit lists.
  • Maintain pleadings, close files, and manage calendars for attorneys, tracking deadlines for hearings, court appearances, and filings.
  • Maintain organized, current, and retrievable electronic case files; ensure data integrity in the case management system.
  • Conduct legal research using libraries and computer databases (e.g., LEXIS, Westlaw).
  • Summarize case precedents and decisions in prescribed formats.
  • Support discovery processes, including scheduling, reviewing, and organizing materials and witnesses.
  • Aid in organizing evidence for production and trial use.
Requirements
  • Familiarity with automated litigation support tools and eDiscovery procedures.
  • Proficiency in legal citation and basic legal research.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Office Suite, document review/file management systems, spreadsheets, imaging tools, and hardware systems.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality work under pressure.

Preferred Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with ESI tools and eDiscovery resources.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with federal legal procedures and documentation standards.

Education and Experience

  • Paralegal certificate or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school (minimum one year completed).
  • One year of legal training/experience or two years of college education may substitute for the certificate.
  • Minimum one year of litigation paralegal or relevant project experience; trial experience preferred.
  • U.S. Citizenship Required.
