Assist professional personnel in the dispensing of medication and preparation of IV Admixtures. Deliver IV solutions and medications when necessary and replace medication to floor stock. Aid in every aspect of required record keeping and maintain professional appearance of the Pharmacy.

Manages inventory levels to ensure adequate product availability and turnover, and purchases all pharmacy products as appropriate.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Obtains and maintains appropriate knowledge and understanding of the Department of Pharmacy at Marlborough Hospital. Follows established policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the automated dispensing machines.
  • Restocking automated dispensing machines (Pyxis Medstation).
  • Loading or unloading drugs from the automated dispensing machine.
  • Maintaining appropriate expiration dating of drugs contained in the automated dispensing machine.
  • Running reports upon demand from automated dispensing machine console.
  • Processing discrepancy, rejection, and credit reports from the automated dispensing machine.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the pharmacy computer system.
  • Processing charges for medications into the pharmacy computer system in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Repackaging, labeling, and determining appropriate expiration dates for unit dosed packaging.
  • Generating reports and labels from the pharmacy computer system.
  • Carries out calculations required for usual dosage determinations and solution preparation, using weight and volume equivalents in metric system.
  • Performs essential functions related to inventory control.
  • Orders drugs using authorized distribution agent's approved ordering computer system including Internet application.
  • Checks in orders and documents receipt on duplicate invoices.
  • Handles problems with order with authorized distribution agent, documents problems and resolution of problems.
  • Maintains inventory in pharmacy and in automated dispensing machines.
  • Monitors expiration dates of drugs in pharmacy and in automated dispensing machines.
  • Performs aseptic compounding of parenteral admixtures and other sterile dosage forms. This includes use of good aseptic technique, proper procedures for preparing all types of parenteral admixtures.
  • Completes pharmacy worksheet for each product compounded,
  • Cleans the IV hood with alcohol daily or whenever appropriate and documents cleaning.
  • Breaks down and cleans IV hood thoroughly at least weekly basis and documents thorough cleaning.
  • Presents compounded product to pharmacist for appropriate checking.
  • Performs essential functions related to pharmaceutical sales representatives and sample medications.
  • Ensures sales representatives complete the sign-in log including location of scheduled appointment and whether samples are being left for an approved area and gives out identification badge.
  • Completes sign-in log when pharmaceutical sales representative returns indicating the identification badge was returned.
  • Telephones sales representatives to request return of identification badge if not returned that day.
  • Logs in appropriate sample information for approved areas that store sample drugs.
  • Completes sample release form with the appropriate sample information if sales representative is delivering the sample medication.
  • Delivers sample medication to approved area that store sample drugs.
  • Participates in proper handling of patient own medications that are stored in the pharmacy.
  • Picks up patient own medications (CVI only) and logs in patient own medications in the pharmacy.
  • Logs out patient own medications from the pharmacy and delivers to the patient care area (CVI only).
  • Conducts inspections of patient care areas and other departments.
  • Identifies problem areas and discusses with appropriate representative of the patient care area or other department and works with area to resolve problem.
  • Notifies pharmacist or Director of Pharmacy of serious identified problems or ongoing problems that are not resolved in a timely manner.
  • Participates in departmental continuous quality improvement program.
  • Collects and tabulates information when requested.
  • Implements changes in procedures based on recommendation from the continuous quality improvement program.
  • Maintains documentation in accordance with regulatory and Hospital requirements.
  • Participates in the training and/or orientation of new pharmacy employees upon request.
  • Responsible for a broad range of purchasing functions.
  • Reviews requests for supplies, ensuring that requisitions are consistent with group purchasing contracts. This process includes conferring with group purchasing personnel and vendors. Maintains interchanged items within the department regarding shelf stickers and pyxis inventory.
  • Assists Pharmacy Director with purchasing problems related to shortages and back orders.
  • Researches costs and availability medications on group purchaser's web site for possible interchanges for savings. Negotiates delivery terms and dates.
  • Assists Pharmacy Director informing clinical personnel of delivery schedules and back-order delivery status for orders in process.
  • Consults with and keeps Pharmacy Director informed regarding order status and/or alternative delivery products or systems.
  • Under direction of the Pharmacy Director, resolves invoicing discrepancies such as price or quantity received. Processes adjustments for damaged or incorrect shipments.
  • Consults with Pharmacy Director and accesses Group Purchasing Databases as required ensuring correct pricing. Identifies opportunities for cost savings and prepares documentation for supervisor/director.
  • Coordinates purchasing details with vendors, including pricing revisions, order cancellations, discontinued items, acceptable substitutes, back-orders, delivery, date revisions and invoice discrepancies.
  • Maintains purchasing records, reports, and statistics as required by Department policy and applicable laws.
  • Maintains 340B program inventory and regulatory compliance.
  • Conducts monthly 340B audits of the split-billing software and inpatient charges to ensure 340B compliance and informs the Pharmacy Director of any irregularities.
  • Ability to back up receiving and distribution functions as needed.
  • Submits invoices directly to finance for payment.
  • Provides statistical information to support invoice and patient charges as compared to reimbursement.
  • Coordinates annual inventory by, updating pricing, maintaining spreadsheet, comparing current spending to previous fiscal years spending.
  • Monitors pricing changes and updates Pyxis as needed to reflect current pricing.
  • Coordinates monthly nursing unit inspections.
  • Coordinates out patient psychiatric medication including, inventory, receiving and monitors medication dispensing logs.
  • Coordinates pharmacy restocking of code carts.
  • Refills medications.
  • Submits charges following a code.
  • Coordinates purchasing and utilization of state provided immunizations.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Board of Registration required.
  • High School Education or certificate of equivalency.

Preferred:

  • Associates/Bachelors degree in Science.

Experience/Skills:
Required:

  • Familiarity with drug brand and generic names.
  • Knowledge of admixing sterile intravenous products including chemotherapy.
  • Previous experience in a hospital pharmacy setting as a certified pharmacy technician.
  • OR equivalent combination of the above.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
