Overview

Con Edison Research & Development is seeking a forward-looking, technology-savvy, data-driven, and value-oriented Section Manager to lead its Emerging Technologies Team and turn ideas into impact.The Research & Development Emerging Technologies Team scouts and partners with existing suppliers with new products, startups, and entrepreneurs to bring cutting-edge technologies into our Company's operations, enhancing and promoting safety, operational excellence, customer experience, and compliance. In the process of partnering with these external stakeholders, the team seeks to create value for the enterprise by commercializing proven emerging technologies in risk-minimizing ways. The team also helps the Company's operating businesses and shared services organizations turn smart ideas into real-world solutions, bridging the gap from concept to deployment, and eventually commercialization.The R&D Emerging Technologies Section Manager leads a team of analysts, connects innovators with business needs, delivers and tracks results through the entire development lifecycle, shares results with leadership, and builds durable partnerships across the utility industry to scale innovation.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Safety: Champion the integration of emerging technologies that enhance safety (along with operational excellence, customer experience, and compliance) across the enterprise.
  • Compliance: Ensure R&D initiatives align with regulatory and internal compliance standards. Develop R&D initiatives that enhance the Companys regulatory compliance performance, posture, and reputation.
  • Upstream/Downstream Engagement: Connect early-stage innovators with operating businesses to co-develop and deploy impactful solutions. Have purposeful field presence in operating businesses to uncover innovation opportunities.
  • Data: Use data-driven insights to guide technology selection, investment management, and performance tracking. Document project progress, lessons learned, and outcomes for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Value orientation: Evaluate R&D projects based on their potential to create tangible, measurable, and durable enterprise value.
  • Cost Optimization: Identify and implement technologies that reduce operational costs without compromising safety, operational excellence, customer experience, or compliance.
  • Tech Savviness: Stay current with emerging technologies and assess their relevance to the Companys operations. Become a readily available resource on utility-specific emerging technologies to all internal stakeholders.
  • Agile Scrum: Apply Agile principles to lead team, manage workflows, prioritize initiatives, and iterate quickly.
  • Problem Solving: Lead the team in solving complex operational challenges through innovative technology applications.
  • Derisking: Design and oversee R&D pilots that validate technologies while minimizing risk to operations. Adhere to the Companys third-party risk management policy when working with any external stakeholders.
  • Scaling: Build partnerships to scale successful innovations across the enterprise and potentially throughout the industry.
  • Coaching & Mentoring: Build teams capacity through coaching, mentoring, and carefully curated professional development opportunities.
  • Collaboration: Join and participate actively in working groups and teams facilitated by Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and other industry collaboratives and represent the Company at events, meetings, and visits.
  • Presentations: Deliver compelling presentations to leadership and industry peers on R&D strategy, progress, and impact.
  • Celebrating Success: Recognize contributions of others and celebrate successful R&D outcomes inclusively.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in any discipline or major and 8+ years of business work experience and 3+ years of supervisory experience
Relevant Work Experience
  • 8-10 years Business work experience, required.
  • 3-5 years Experience supervising people, required.
  • Investment and/or entrepreneurial experience with measurable success, required.
  • Experience using Agile, Scrum, or Rapid Results in project management or product development, required.
  • Agile, Scrum, Rapid Results, Lean Six Sigma, and/or Project Management Professional certification, required.
  • Experience using Artificial Intelligence (Microsoft Copilot) to address multiple business use cases to unlock process or product efficiencies, required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365, required.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
