The Position

An East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) Truck Driver II operates a variety of Class A vehicles such as 10-wheel dump trucks, scoop trucks, and bobtail towing equipment trailers in order to transport heavy loads of construction equipment, materials, and spoils.

The Truck Driver II position requires skill in operating vehicles with airbrakes and manual transmissions with various gearboxes.

The Truck Driver II drives throughout EBMUD's service area including streets in residential and commercial areas, hill areas with narrow access roads and tight turns, and local thoroughfares and freeways that also serve as commuter routes.

*Possess a valid, unrestricted Class A driver's license. Tanker and air brake endorsements is preferred and may be required for some positions.

*Have significant experience and demonstrated skill in safely and efficiently operating a variety of Class A vehicles such as 10 wheel dump trucks, scoop trucks, and bobtail towing equipment trailers, as well as articulated loaders and backhoes to load materials in construction settings.

*Demonstrate skill in safely and efficiently loading, unloading, securing and transporting various materials and equipment.

*Demonstrate skill in safely and efficiently operating a 10-wheel dump truck with equipment trailer combination.

*Interact effectively with the public and other EBMUD staff.

The salary range is $8,435 per month, increasing to $8,857, $9,300 and $9,765 after 12, 24 and 36 months, respectively.

Requirements

1.Completion of the eighth grade or its equivalent* and

2a.One year of experience involving the regular operation of trucks having at least three axles and a gross vehicle weight of more than 26,000 lbs.; OR

2b.Six months (1040 hours) of cumulative experience with EBMUD as a Truck Driver II; OR

2c. Successful completion of EBMUD's Truck Driver Training Program.

3.Must possess a valid, unrestricted California Class A driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record. Some positions require air brakes, tanker and/or hazardous materials endorsements.

4. Ability to pass federally mandated, pre-employment, and continuing random drug testing is a condition of employment; willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, to work standby and overtime, and to participate in job site reporting as needed; and the physical characteristics necessary to perform the critical and important duties of the job, including sufficient strength to lift and carry 90 lbs. and to maneuver, with proper equipment, pipes and fittings weighing over 200 lbs.

The Selection Process

1.Submit a completed EBMUD application and the required supplemental question responses online at www.ebmud.com by 4:30 p.m., Friday, October 31, 2025. Only applications submitted online during the filing period will be accepted.

2.Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.

3.All applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated. A limited number of candidates presenting the qualifications most relevant to this position will be invited to continue in the selection process, which will include a performance test. Meeting minimum qualifications does not guarantee continuing in the selection process.

4.The performance test will consist of a pre-trip inspection, a skills test, and a road test operating a 10-wheel dump truck with attached equipment trailer. Rating criteria will be consistent with DMV Class A standards for all test parts. The performance test is tentatively scheduled to be held in early-December, 2025.

5.Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.

6.The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.

7.All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
