Detention Officer
Starting Pay: $24.95 - $27.54 per hour

Brief Description:
Supervise and monitor behavior of residents, coordinate and cooperate with law enforcement agencies and judiciary agencies as necessary. Plans and performs a wide range of detention duties to ensure the proper booking, incarceration and safety of persons committed to the Detention Center, inspect facilities for cleanliness, cleaning and sanitizing the facility, identify and report conditions or practices that may compromise overall sanitation effectiveness, maintain an inventory of sanitation supplies, maintain and inventory of all inmate supplies, stored clothing and distribution. Work schedule is dependent on facility needs. Employee may transport prisoners to court and other appearances. Employee must perform all duties with minimal supervision. Detention officers may be assigned to duty stations in the Adult Male Unit, Adult Female Unit. Employee may be required to work irregular hours, attend briefing detail 15 minutes before and after shift, attend job-related meetings in and out of town, and perform all other duties assigned.
Job Requirements:
- Education- High School Diploma or GED certificate is required.
- Experience- Detention Officer experience preferred.
- Certification- Must successfully pass the 160-hour Detention Officer Certification course and 40-hour Defensive Tactics course or within one year of hire. Must be able to become certified in CPR/1st Aid/AED within one (1) year of hire. Must successfully pass Defensive Driving course within six (6) months of hire.
- Background- Must successfully pass criminal and employment background investigations. Must have NO felony or domestic violence convictions or misdemeanors convictions involving moral turpitude. Eligibility to work in the U.S. verified thru E-Verify.
- Pre-Employment Testing- All job offers are contingent upon successfully passing a written testing, psychological evaluation, pre-employment physical examination and drug screen. License Must have, or ability to obtain, a current valid NM driver’s license and be insurable by the County Insurance Authority. MUST PROVIDE A CURRENT DRIVING RECORD.
- Vision- Correctable to 20/20.
- Communication- Effective oral and written communication skills in English is required.
- Knowledge- Must be knowledgeable of all rules, regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines. Must possess basic math skills to deal with time-served, money and bonding procedures.
- Reasoning- Must be able to use visual and auditory skills to properly operate control room equipment, must use sound judgment in determining level of incarceration for each inmate and in responding inmates or emergency situations.
- Performance- Ability to perform in the working conditions with the tools, equipment and materials listed below.
- Other- This Safety Sensitive position is subject to random drug screen.
