The Center for Biomedical Informatics & Biostatistics (CB2) at the University of Arizona seeks a Research Informatics Programmer Analyst to support the research enterprise and mission with informatics, tools, clinical data sources, and shared human and technical resources. This position will design, develop, implement, and support the Research Informatics tools infrastructure in CB2 to support a wide variety of clinical and biomedical research projects. The position will collaborate with researchers for gathering, transforming and analyzing data from various databases and sources, performing programming, evaluate new platforms, techniques and scientific programs, develop reports and visual representations and develop and maintain databases; provide consultation.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Advises on Research Informatics Architecture lifecycle and evolution.
  • Creates technical and use documentation for all systems.
  • Designs, modifies, and/or adapts unique one-of-a-kind data systems in support of biomedical research or instruction.
  • Implements and supports research informatics platforms.
  • Provides custom API support, database implementations, cloud deployments, and research data infrastructure to projects and institutional systems.
  • Assists with server management duties to ensure back-ups and continuity of services, especially during upgrades, including managing/debugging Operating System-Application Software interactions.
  • Work with researchers to determine the best data and informatics
    solutions and designs for clinical research and implement the resulting data and informatics solutions.
  • Build, deploy and manage research data pipeline, including Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) pipelines, to migrate data from source systems to the data warehouse/repository for biomedical research datasets and to support researchers with limited/identified datasets from both internal and external sources.
  • Operates and conducts performance checks on highly complex research projects.
  • Develop/integrate instruments/forms within data collection platforms e.g., REDCap project(s) to collect, manage, and distribute data for various research studies.
  • Assists with the management of the research technology for CB2 applications that support the University's research mission.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in creating and accessing APIs using either
    Python/FastAPI or R/Plumber.
  • Use of version control systems such as Git.
  • Strong computer skills including experience with database
    management systems (MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, MS SQL, etc.) and ODBC.
  • Ability to gather, listen and respond to feedback to ensure
    the data system meets stakeholder needs.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to self-direct and
    meet project deadlines.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Informatics, Data Science or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree a plus.
  • Experience with biomedical data and ontologies preferred.
  • Experience in an academic research environment preferred.
  • Experience with HIPAA and clinical research data privacy and security preferred.
  • Experience with MariaDB desirable.
  • Experience with standard cloud deployment architectures preferred.
  • Experience developing automation scripts preferred.
  • Experience with log file analysis preferred.
  • Experience with basic cybersecurity principles and practices.
  • Experience with Microsoft Server and Linux environments.
  • Experience with developing research solutions in current programming languages including Python and R .
