Your Job

DEPCOM Power, a Koch Engineered Solutions company, is an emerging leader in the Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) and Operation and Maintenance (O&M) of utility scale solar plants. DEPCOM is looking for a SCADA Technical Lead to join the team that can work well in a fast paced environment. This position can be based in Scottsdale, AZ or remotely within the U.S. with travel.

This role will require approximately 40-60% travel based on business needs.

Our Team

DEPCOM's Services team is composed of professionals with expertise in operations, maintenance, and performance engineering. We are dedicated to delivering superior value by maximizing the performance and extending the lifecycle of solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) plants across the United States.

Our Services team collaborates closely with other business units throughout the entire project lifecycle to provide seamless transitions, effective training, proactive maintenance, and data-driven performance optimization. By leveraging both proven and emerging technologies, we create innovative solutions that ensure our customers' renewable energy assets operate safely, efficiently, and reliably.

What You Will Do

  • Continuously monitor service and support channels, including phone lines, email, chat, and ticketing systems, to ensure timely and effective resolution of SCADA-related issues impacting plant operations.
  • Function as the primary Services team representative in engineering and technical design updates and discussions, providing critical input to ensure serviceability, operational efficiency, and alignment with customer needs.
  • Provide targeted training, mentorship, and technical support to DEPCOM Services team members, enhancing their ability to operate, troubleshoot, and maintain SCADA systems confidently and independently.
  • Configure, test, and troubleshoot communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, OPC UA, and others, ensuring robust and secure data flow between SCADA, PV inverters, BESS, substations, and field devices.
  • Develop and maintain deep subject matter expertise on the SCADA architecture, including substations, photovoltaic (PV) systems, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and associated connected sensors and devices (e.g., meteorological stations, power conversion systems, remote terminal units, RTACs).
  • Analyze relay event reports, with a focus on Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) relays, to identify correct operations and misoperations. Collaborate with protection engineers and field teams to troubleshoot relay behavior and recommend corrective actions to maintain system reliability and safety.
  • Lead root cause analysis and resolution efforts for complex SCADA system faults or performance issues, coordinating with cross-functional teams such as engineering, operations, and vendor support to implement long-term solutions.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives by evaluating new SCADA technologies, tools, and best practices to enhance system reliability, cybersecurity, and scalability across DEPCOM assets.
  • Support documentation efforts by creating and maintaining detailed technical manuals, system diagrams, and training materials to ensure knowledge retention and smooth handoffs between teams.
  • Assist in developing and enforcing SCADA cybersecurity protocols and compliance standards to safeguard critical infrastructure from evolving cyber threats.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Proficient in analyzing relay event reports, identifying correct operations and mis operations, and collaborating with protection engineers to resolve issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Basic understanding of control systems and their associated instrumentation, including SCADA architectures and communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, DNP3, OPC UA).
  • Hands-on experience with the startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting of instrumentation, control equipment, and field devices in renewable energy systems (e.g., PV, BESS, substations).
  • Demonstrated ability to review, interpret, and present technical documentation, such as system diagrams, relay settings, and event logs, to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Strong knowledge of relay and automation products, including Siemens, GE, SEL (Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories), ABB, and associated software tools for configuration, analysis, and troubleshooting.
  • Proven experience in the design, startup, and commissioning of photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) control systems, demonstrating the ability to deliver reliable and efficient renewable energy projects.
  • Hands-on experience with Ignition SCADA software and its modules.
  • Solid understanding of networking concepts and protocols relevant to SCADA systems, including IP addressing, subnetting, VLANs, and secure communication practices.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity best practices and compliance standards for SCADA and relay systems is a plus.
