General Description
The Johns Hopkins University Agile and Intelligent Robotics Laboratory (https://airo.lcsr.jhu.edu/) seeks a Robotics Research Engineer/Scientist to lead the development of aerial robotic systems. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated engineer, expected to work independently and in a group environment with faculty and students. The applicant will be expected to work across the entire flight stack, including mechanical and electrical flight hardware, firmware, and software, and across the entire system life cycle, including conceptualization, design, fabrication, and test. The individual should also have familiarity with common open source autopilot software solutions (e.g., Ardupilot and PX4) and user interfaces (e.g., Mission Planner and Q-Ground Control). This individual should be proficient in computer-aided design (either ProE or Solidworks), and be familiar with firmware and software development, preferably using the Robot Operating System (ROS). Projects focus on development of aerial and aquatic robotic systems, especially on systems operating under extreme conditions and at extreme flight envelopes. Experience with aerial robotic systems, aerial vehicle design, rapid prototyping, and robot software development/integration are preferred. Assignments include: - Handle multiple priorities. - Interface with faculty, students, engineers, designers, and lab personnel. - Research, design, and validate aerial vehicle designs. - Analyze problems, provide solutions, and provide support. - Document designs, assembly procedures, and installation protocols. - Travel to research sites (requirement fluctuates but will generally be <10%). - Laboratory safety, training, and management. QualificationsRequired Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Candidates with significant experience in lieu of degree may be considered. - Demonstrated understanding of mechatronic system design and fabrication. - Strong communication and organizational skills - Solid understanding of engineering principles needed to design, fabricate, and validate work. - Strong background in aerial vehicle design and fabrication. - Experience in material selection and mechanical design principles. - Demonstrated computer modeling/computer aided design experience. - Basic knowledge and capability in manufacturing processes, both traditional (lathe, mill, casting, etc.) and modern (laser cutter, 3D printing, etc.). - Background in firmware and software development for robotic and/or aerial systems. - Familiarity with electronics systems and components for aerial vehicles.
