Job Description: A Senior Materials Engineer position is available with Analytical Mechanics Associates (AMA) to provide support for current energy storage materials research at theNASA Langley Research Center, located in Hampton, VA. Specific job description: The successful candidate will join a research team atNASA Langley Research Center in Hampton to provide technical expertise to the Advanced Materials and Processing Branch (AMPB) under the RSES (Research, Science and Engineering Services) contract. The successful candidate will serve as a technical leader, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to push the boundaries of solid-state battery technology. Energy storage is essential for space exploration, with batteries, fuel cells, and supercapacitors being key technologies. To meet the demands of extreme space environments, including wide temperature swings and radiation, battery technologies are advancing beyond standard lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. For example, solid-state batteries have recently appeared as an attractive platform that could meet such criteria. To facilitate the progression of these technologies, comprehensive multiscale scientific and engineering research is required at the materials level. The ideal candidate will research and develop energy storage materials for space exploration missions in extreme environments. The primary research focus is the creation of solid-state batteries for space applications, covering the development of new materials, electrochemical systems, and prototype cells. The current focus is on the development of materials, chemistries, and prototype cells of solid-state batteries toward space applications. The selected candidate will drive innovation in battery development through electrochemical studies, cell performance evaluation, and prototype engineering. This role requires a candidate who can effectively communicate with technical team and advocate for project management, foster new work, establish key partnerships, and clearly present technical outcomes in both presentations and written reports.The candidate must be able to cultivate a workplace environment of engagement, diversity, inclusion, excellence, and innovation.
