Overview
Position is for Supervisor of D341 Welding Engineering Structural Group covering the Quonset Point facility. The successful candidates will be responsible for supervising direct reports within the Welding Engineering Construction Support groups focused on structural welding. The Welding Engineering Supervisor will also be responsible for working with and providing technical assistance and guidance to other Electric Boat sites as needed. The Welding Engineering Structural Construction Support groups are primarily responsible for the following:
Providing technical solutions, guidance and expertise on complex welding related issues to design, construction, and overhaul activities taking place at various Electric Boat locations
- Providing technical guidance for the application of all major welding processes (GMAW, SMAW, SAW, and GTAW)
- Developing and maintaining company standards, procedures and best practices in the areas of nuclear and non-nuclear welding
- Reviewing and dispositioning Engineering Reports, Deficiency Forms/Reports, Task Group Instructions, Trade UNSATs and Welding Engineering Instructions related to welding
- Providing Welding Engineering services in the area of investigative and failure analysis of welds using various methods
- Supporting emergent Operations and shipyard production issues as necessary
- Reviewing, administering, and interpreting welding fabrication specifications
- Identifying resources, planning and assigning work, tracking progress and ensuring timely completion of work and projects within budgeted hours
- Providing training and developing direct report employees' critical skills to meet department short and long term objectives
- Interfacing with Electric Boat Engineering, Non-Destructive Test (NDT) Engineering, Operations and other departments, as well as SUPSHIP Groton, NRRO, NR, and NAVSEA as required
- Contributing to annual self-assessments of Electric Boat's overall welding program and local welding engineering performance and supporting proactive initiatives to improve the Health of Welding program across sites
The successful candidates will report directly to the Manager of Welding Engineering. This posting is located in North Kingstown, RI.
Qualifications
Required:
- B.S. degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering, or other engineering discipline
- A minimum of four (4) years of engineering experience at Electric Boat or
- 4+ years of Welding engineering within commercial industry
Preferred:
- Advanced degree in Engineering
- Previous supervisory experience
- 8+ years of Welding engineering experience within commercial industry or EB
- 1+ year experience in a leadership role
- Professional background in Quality Assurance is desired, but experience in an industrial environment, shipbuilding, or other heavy fabrication is beneficial
Skills
- Candidate must possess strong mentoring and team building skills
- Candidate must possess ability to develop critical skills within a team
- Candidate must be able to exercise proper judgement to decide between competing courses of action
- Familiarity with fabrication requirements of NAVSEA Technical Publication S9074-AR-GIB-010/278 and T9074-AD-GIB-010/1688 as well as qualification of welding procedures and welders to NAVSEA Technical Publication S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248 is highly desired. Alternatively, experience with equivalent commercial (i.e. AWS/ASME) fabrication and qualification specifications is acceptable
- Ability to motivate, direct, and understand others in order to effectively manage direct reports
- Ability to effectively manage priorities and plan work to support customer needs
- Ability to support internal and external customer needs
- Ability to effectively communicate with direct reports, Manager, and Director-level personnel
