Job Description

Infection Control Nurse / Staff Educator (Full-Time)

The Ridge Behavioral Health System is a 110-bed hospital offering psychiatric and substance use disorder treatment for children, adolescents, and adults.

Our specialized treatment services are provided by a multidisciplinary team of highly trained psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, addiction counselors, nurses, and activity therapists.

Infection Control: Coordinates and supervises all facets of infection surveillance, prevention and control program in addition to her/his assigned role. The functions related to infection surveillance, prevention and control require that a minimum of eight hours per week are devoted to these responsibilities. Follows and abides by company policies, procedures, and Corporate Compliance Program, as applicable to role and responsibilities.

Staff Educator: Plans, develops and coordinates continuing clinical and non-clinical in-service education programs within The Ridge BHS for all staff. The Staff Educator works with facility leadership and staff to assess current educational needs and develop a plan to satisfy those needs. The position also assists in ongoing revision and implementation of policies and procedures, protocol development, and equipment implementation. This position involves the orientation of new staff and coordinates CPR certification for staff as needed. This position functions with limited supervision and must be able to work effectively across all hospital departments. Additionally, the Staff Educator is expected to stay current on the latest care techniques within their own educational area of expertise. Follows and abides by company policies, procedures, and Corporate Compliance Program, as applicable to role and responsibilities.

  • Job Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Infection Control:
  • Responsible for the organization's infection control surveillance, prevention, and control program. Ensures that all patient care and patient support departments/services are included in the infection control program.
  • Conducts ongoing reviews and analysis of hospital-acquired infection data, risk factors, and when needed. Conducts special studies that relate to infection prevention and control.
  • Develops intervention strategies based on ongoing reviews and special studies.
  • Effectively monitors the effects of the intervention strategies on infection rates and modifies the intervention as necessary.
  • Infection Control policies are well written, concise, and meet 100% of the standards established by reviewing and regulatory agencies.
  • Responsibility for employee health records; ensuring accurate records for all Ridge staff.
  • Staff Eductor:
  • Ensures staff training addresses any changes in health care management and health science and technology.
  • Education and training programs address areas of deficiencies identified via the performance appraisal system, peer reviews, chart audits, and recommendations from safety and infection control committees.
  • Sets training/educational programs needed to remedy deficiencies identified during annual staff development survey, issues identified by observation, and as directed by the Director of Nursing and Risk Manager.
  • Ensures that educational programs meet the overall needs of hospital staff.
  • Conducts chart audits on a regular basis, enters the data collected, prepares a summary report of the data and incorporates the findings into new employee orientation materials and on-unit training.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Education

  • A Registered Nurse with a Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university required; A Master's Degree (M.A.) preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum five years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably acute care/behavioral health hospital setting.
  • Must have specific interest, training, and/or experience in infection control.
  • Demonstrates continuing education specifically related to infection surveillance, prevention and control.

Certifications/Licensure

  • Current RN Licensure.
  • Crisis intervention training is required. This training is offered upon hire.
  • CPR

Other Skills

  • Must have strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to coordinate, analyze, observe, make decisions, and meet deadlines in a detail-oriented manner.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and/or making decisions.
  • Additional knowledge relating to epidemiology, infectious diseases, sterilization, sanitation, and disinfection practices.
  • Must have the knowledge and ability to teach other staff in the application of infection control concepts.
