Staff Accountant - Payroll

Job Objective: The Staff Accountant - Payroll is responsible for maintaining the accuracy of payroll processing and reporting for all employees of the division.

Essential Functions:



  • Process all aspects of employee payroll process with accuracy and promptness


  • Calculate draws from unit accounts and ensure bank transactions are completed


  • Record payroll activities through accurate journal entries


  • Reconcile payroll related ledger accounts monthly; promptly research and resolve any reconciliation discrepancies


  • Coordinate monthly insurance billing for health/life/voluntary life premiums providing billing reports as early as possible each month


  • Complete quarterly employee pension process


  • Maintain employee cell phone stipend files


  • Prepare various additional information and perform calculations including:


  • Quarterly pension reports


  • Fringe benefit values including maintaining mileage logs


  • Worker's compensation wage reports


  • Audit reports


  • Serve as a liaison between the field and employees, collaborating closely with Human Resources on employee-related matters.


  • Calculate draws for officer payroll based on THQ received reports


  • Complete officer benefit reports as requested by THQ



Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Associate's degree in related field; may consider experience in lieu of education

Experience: Previous experience in payroll and accounting preferred

Certifications/Licenses: None

Skills/Abilities:



  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel & e-mail


  • Knowledge of ADP Payroll systems preferred


  • Confident, self-motivated, multi-tasked individual with integrity in the use of resources


  • Ability to be a team-player


  • Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality of sensitive information


  • Act in a manner consistent with the Mission Statement of The Salvation Army


  • Highly organized, detail-oriented self-starter


  • Ability to meet deadlines


  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with employees at all levels

Supervisory Responsibility: None

Physical Requirements: Include good speaking, hearing and vision ability and excellent manual dexterity. Ability to stand, bend and reach for extended periods of time, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment. May need to climb, balance, kneel, crouch or crawl. This position will require the ability to lift and/or move more than 10 pounds occasionally. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions of this job.

Travel: Travel is not required.

Driving: Driving is not required.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a typical office environment. Moderate noise level in business office.
