Overview
At Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, we are pioneering the future of RNAi therapeutics. We seek a dynamic and strategic Director of Competitive Intelligence to drive critical insights that inform decision-making across our clinical and commercial programs.

This role is pivotal to shaping the strategic direction of our portfolio by delivering synthesized, forward-looking intelligence on the evolving competitive landscape. Partnering closely with R&D, Medical Affairs, and Commercial colleagues, you will ensure that competitive insights are integrated, actionable, and aligned with business priorities.

The ideal candidate brings exceptional scientific depth, business acumen, and executive presence, paired with a collaborative mindset and the ability to influence at all levels of the organization.

This role reports to the Director, Insights & Analytics and is a key contributor within the Customer Experience & Innovation (CX&I) team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Competitive Monitoring & Analysis: Continuously monitor the evolving competitive landscape, interpreting complex competitor activities and distilling findings into high-value, strategically relevant insights that shape decision-making.
  • Synthesis & Strategic Implication: Integrate diverse data streams into coherent, forward-looking narratives that go beyond reporting - delivering the "so what" through clear articulation of risks, opportunities, and recommended strategic actions.
  • Therapeutic Area Breadth: Rapidly develop expertise across multiple therapeutic areas to support an expanding and dynamic pipeline, ensuring insights remain comprehensive, timely, and impactful.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Serve as a strategic integrator across R&D, Medical Affairs, and Commercial teams, connecting inputs and perspectives to build unified, enterprise-aligned competitive intelligence outputs.
  • Scientific Credibility: Leverage advanced scientific knowledge to engage credibly with scientific and clinical teams, enabling nuanced interpretation of competitor data and implications for Alnylam's programs.
  • Executive Communication: Craft and deliver succinct, high-impact presentations tailored to senior leadership audiences, driving alignment, action, and strategic clarity at the highest levels of the organization.
  • Vendor Management: Lead partnerships with external competitive intelligence vendors, ensuring deliverables meet the highest standards of strategic relevance, quality, and timeliness; oversee project scopes, execution, and delivery.
  • Ad Hoc Support: Act as a responsive and strategic partner to leadership by delivering clear, high-quality, time-sensitive competitive analyses and recommendations as business needs evolve.
  • Process Innovation: Continuously enhance competitive intelligence processes, tools, and knowledge-sharing frameworks to accelerate insight generation, scale impact across the organization, and elevate the strategic value of CI.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a life sciences discipline (PhD, PharmD, or MS required).
  • Minimum of 10+ years of progressive experience in competitive intelligence, strategy, new product planning, consulting, or related fields within the biopharma industry.
  • Experience supporting both clinical development and commercial organizations preferred.
  • Experience in global, matrixed organizations preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in matrixed environments and influencing without direct authority.
  • Effective collaborator with a track record of driving alignment across functional boundaries.
  • Strong scientific acumen with the ability to synthesize clinical, scientific, and market data into actionable business insights.
  • Proven ability to develop executive-level communications and strategic recommendations.
  • Experience managing external vendors and CI-related projects.
  • Proficiency in CI tools, databases, and Microsoft Office Suite (especially PowerPoint and Excel).
  • Highly motivated, adaptable, intellectually curious, and results-driven.

Willingness to travel up to 5-10% to Congresses, home office or internal cross-functional engagements.

  • Impact & Accountability: Influences strategic direction and resource allocation by ensuring competitive insights directly inform brand strategy, messaging, access, and patient engagement. Holds self and collaborators accountable for high-quality, insight-driven outcomes.
  • Influence: Communicates complex recommendations clearly and persuasively, often to senior stakeholders. Anticipates challenges, addresses objections, and effectively negotiates across functions to align on strategic priorities and decisions.
