Job Description

Architect, Functional Safety

Responsible for technical leadership and development of functional safety technologies and standards for use in Rockwell Automation products. These core product lines might involve Programmable Automation, Communications, I/O systems or Industrial Automation Software. These are industry-leading industrial automation products.

You will define, design and develop new features and platforms that meet Functional Safety standards, and customer expectations. Development is performed in a team environment utilizing sound engineering and software development practices and technology, and typically involves highly complex system design or product architecture design. Responsibilities include developing and documenting safety concepts, as well as collaborating with individuals and teams who execute the implementations.

You will report to the Director- Logix Architecture and will have a hybrid work schedule.

Essential Functions

• Does advance work, including requirements, on a feature before a development team is in place. Evaluate the suitability of that technology to meet our business and engineering objectives. As part of this, work directly with suppliers to arrive at the information we need to make informed judgements.
• Participate with technology management, product marketing and development engineering to establish project objectives and requirements related to functional safety. Evaluate technology solutions.
• Create safety concepts for next generation capabilities or products. This includes the ability to do deep technical analysis of reliability metrics, failure modes, diagnostic coverage, etc., to determine feasibility of approaches to meet targets established by international standards.
• Contribute to or develop architectural designs and independently develop complex system designs that meet the requirements. Provide skills needs and time estimation for the design. Consider tradeoffs between requirements, speed, cost and reliability in the choice of a design approach.
• Successfully present technical approaches with sound qualitative and quantitative analysis to certifying agencies.
• Maintain technical expertise in field. Keep current through contacts with educational institutions, professional societies, and technical publications. Maintain awareness of applicable new technologies, processes, and competitive trends.
• Promote and coordinate, technical activities with standards organizations, consortia, government agencies, leading universities and other Rockwell organizations. May be asked to participated in standards activities.
• Functions as a go-to person for functional safety expertise. Consult across multiple teams. Assist as requested with problem resolution, product design reviews, and technical strategy analysis and development. Significantly contribute to the development and implementation of the product strategic direction in functional safety.
• Clearly communicates and conveys design concepts, both verbally and written. Work complex control system concepts.
• Effectively teams with others through mutually supportive professional relationships, open and direct communications and respect.
• Conduct tasks in accordance with applicable health, safety, quality and environmental regulations (state/federal laws, ISO 9001, ISO 14000, etc.) and Rockwell Automation policies and procedures.

The Essentials- you will have:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of relevant work experience
• Legal authorization to work in the US is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.

The Preferred- you might also have:

• Typically required a minimum 15 years in product development experience
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent science degree and applicable experience. Graduate degree preferred.
• Experience in functional safety product development experience.
• Intimate familiarity with structured/disciplined product development (IEC 61508 V-model, DOD-STD-2167A, ISO 26262, ...)
• Experience with a minimum of three IEC 61508 product certifications or equivalent certification in non-Industrial industries (medical device, avionics, automotive, etc.).
• Requires an ability to sell ideas and present strategies at all organization levels.
• Previous technical team leadership
• Agile software development using Scrum/SAFe
• Must be able to travel occasionally to customer and vendor sites throughout the world.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience with key functional safety technologies such as lock-step processors, software encoded processing, etc.
• Technology change leader.
• Direct involvement with the Industrial Automation industry.
• Experience in highly available systems.
• Experience with both local and global technical development team environments.
