Position Summary The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer II position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied. This engineering position is within the Distributed Generation (DG) Engineering team in the Distributed Energy Group (DEG). The DG Engineering team supports the interconnection of renewable energy to the distribution grid by ensuring technical and regulatory compliance of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) such as solar PV and battery energy storage projects. This Engineer I or Engineer II role will be responsible for performing DER interconnection studies, refining interconnection study processes, and implementing process improvement initiatives. The candidate needs to have a technical background and be comfortable working in an agile, fast-paced, technical environment.
Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
- Provide technical support for interconnection studies and other team projects to ensure adherence to interconnection standards and utility best practices for safe and effective interconnection to the utility grid across multiple jurisdictional areas
- Perform power system modeling and analysis utilizing tools such as CYME
- Collaborate with other DG team engineers to support internal and external project stakeholders throughout the DER interconnection process
- Become proficient in DER interconnection policies and procedures
- Actively participate in special assignments, including representing the DG team for DER-related issues among other organizations within Duke Energy
Required/Basic Qualifications Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relative experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below. Engineer I
- Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
Engineer II
- Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
- Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with the utility industry
- Knowledge of utility distribution system electrical design, operation, and reliability
- Experience with reading and evaluating electrical one-line diagrams
- Experience with DER systems such as solar PV and battery energy storage
- Familiarity with DER interconnection policies and procedures
- Understanding of basic principles of Power Engineering and Power System Analysis
- Experience in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, and preparing and presenting recommendations
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present information and provide direction to others
- Demonstrated effective teamwork skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal day-to-day direction while maintaining performance expectations
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple concurrent projects and tasks
- Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds
- Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam
Working Conditions
- Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the listed Duke Energy facility.
