Job Summary:
The University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries is seeking a collaborative, innovative, forward- thinking strategic leader to serve in the role of Associate Dean of Libraries for Research. The Associate Dean (AD) provides senior level leadership to guide the efforts of various campus library programs and services and is actively involved in shaping and implementing research service aspects of the Libraries' strategic plans and directions. Their duties include steering program development and assessment, as well as allocating resources to advance the Libraries' mission.
The Associate Dean of Libraries for Research Services is primarily responsible for promoting and advancing research support and collaboration across all campus libraries, assuming the comprehensive coordination of library research services and activities. Reporting directly to the Dean and Vice Provost of Libraries, the AD leads the development, communication, implementation, and evaluation of strategic directions and priorities pertaining to these library services and functions. The AD serves as a member of the Libraries Executive Council, which is chaired by the Dean and is composed of Associate Deans and senior administrative colleagues. In collaboration with senior library leadership, the Associate Dean will participate in assessing the re-imagined and realigned library services and organizational structures designed to meet the emerging needs of the campus community. The Associate Dean engages in campus-wide initiatives alongside library governance groups, and works with consortial partners at the regional, state, national, and international levels, to ensure access to vital library services and programs, and to bolster the reputation of campus libraries across the campus and the profession.
The Associate Dean for Research directly supervises professional staff and has responsibility for approximately 32 full-time equivalent (FTE) staff working across these services which include International and Area Studies, Science and Engineering Libraries, Scholarly Communications, Research Data Management, Public Access Management, and Digital Scholarship services. The AD leads efforts to coordinate the provision of a coherent staff and user experience across library research services on which the campus community relies.
Responsibilities:
Serves as a senior academic officer at the institutional level. Plans, directs, and provides administrative, operational, and strategic leadership for one or more recognized academic programs or departments with institutional scope. Represents the academic program regarding strategic planning, curriculum development, faculty recruitment and retention; and ensures the integration and coordination of academic programs and initiatives.
- 20% Provides leadership for one or more academic programs by establishing strategic direction and setting priorities that align with the academic directives of the Dean, and ensures units effectively carry out duties in a way that best supports the university's initiatives, strategic direction, and academic mission; provides direct supervision of department/program leadership and monitors compliance with laws, regulations, university policies and procedures, and relevant contractual obligations
- 20% Advises and collaborates with the Dean, Assistant Deans, and/or Office of the Provost on critical issues, represents the functional area of supervision at appropriate meetings and events as requested; and serves on and/or leads various program and/or university committees as directed to address issues
- 5% Directs on-going assessment and continuous improvement of academic programs and services by guiding the establishment of annual goals, ensuring progress towards goals is met, articulating challenges, and reporting on annual outcomes and achievements for programs/services
- 10% Ensures initiatives are effectively using program assessment and data analysis to improve initiatives and strategies, identifies opportunities for improvement, and makes recommendations to the Dean for approval
- 10% Leads special initiatives and/or academic programs that require senior leadership attention with respect to program design, planning, coordination, and interaction with internal and external stakeholders
- 10% Builds consensus and develops collegial, collaborative working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, partners with administrative and academic departments to support initiatives, and gathers input from key stakeholders to support recommendations
- 15% May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
- 5% Serves on various university review committees, working with a wide range of constituencies including the Faculty Senate, Deans and Associate Deans, General Counsel, and University Leadership
- 5% Designs and employs regular cycles of assessment, evaluation, and review to sustain quality of services and programs
Tasks:
- Provides visionary leadership for the Libraries' research and liaison services ensuring alignment with the University's mission.
- Identifies gaps in library research support services and establishes strategies to fill or overcome gaps through ongoing assessment, active participation in the research enterprise, and developing appropriate organizational structures and functions.
- Collaboratively facilitates the development of academic and research collaborations with faculty across academic units and research centers, ensuring the alignment of library services with research needs across the university.
- Contributes domain knowledge and experience to senior administrative organization-wide planning and strategy-development.
- Implements and assesses innovative, user-centric library research services to enhance patron experience.
- Aligns personnel and services with University and Libraries' strategic objectives, collaborating with stakeholders across the university and partner institutions.
- Contributes to planning, policy, budgeting, and personnel management across libraries.
- Fosters and sustains an inclusive and welcoming environment for all through the provision of equitable services in support of the university community.
- Champions a culture of professional development, collaboration and knowledge sharing, fostering a dynamic environment where staff are empowered to excel and innovate in their roles.
- Supports fundraising and development efforts for the Dean.
- Represents the Libraries at all levels of the university and with our partners across the Universities of Wisconsin system, the Big Ten Academic Alliance, and beyond.
- Participates in professional networks and associations, leveraging these connections to stay abreast of industry trends, best practices, and emerging service needs.

Qualifications:
Required: - A minimum of five years of relevant experience is strongly preferred, with at least two years in an academic library setting. This experience should include professional responsibilities demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of a research library's role in partnering and delivering services to advance research and scholarship. - Proven track record of effectively fostering partnerships and collaborations that leverage the diverse roles libraries can fulfill in addressing the changing needs of students, faculty, and staff. - Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills. - Evidence of substantial professional engagement and contribution, demonstrating a keen awareness of emerging issues and trends influencing the campus research ecosystem and the alignment of library services and programs. -Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive working and learning environment where all can flourish, with experience supporting programmatic efforts to engage a broad range of perspectives, backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures.
Preferred: - Demonstrated success in implementing library services and programs requiring the alignment of resources to meet growing academic and research needs of an institution. - Experience building and sustaining campus partnerships and collaborating with faculty and researchers to integrate library services and resources to evolving research and scholarship practices. - Ability to maintain a strong commitment to scholarly engagement and professional service, including presentations, publications, and service on campus-wide, regional, and/or national-level professional organizations. - Develops and maintains knowledge of emerging and best practices related to liaison librarianship across disciplines, digital scholarship, research data management, and scholarly communications.
