SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Campus Libraries, the next Associate University Librarian (
AUL) will be tasked with working effectively in a centralized library system while serving as a leader at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. The successful candidate will strategically develop resources, facilities, and services for students, faculty, and staff in support of the Rutgers-New Brunswick mission and academic master plan. The
AUL manages a budget of more than $7 million and oversees personnel matters, including the recruitment, appointment, and evaluation of 25+ librarians and archivists, 40 full-time staff, and a sizeable pool of student and hourly support staff. The ideal candidate will bring an energetic, positive, solution-oriented sensibility to their work and will foster a culture of teamwork, systemwide collaboration, and the open exchange of ideas.
The
AUL has an active role within Rutgers-New Brunswick and works closely with campus stakeholders, including the chancellor, provost, deans of various schools, and directors of centers and institutes to ensure that the collections, resources, services, and spaces of the Libraries contribute to the overall mission and success of Rutgers University.
The
AUL - New Brunswick serves as an active member of the Rutgers University Libraries Leadership Team. In this senior leadership role, the incumbent contributes to strategic, data-driven decisions to provide effective stewardship of collections, ensure delivery of high-quality services, and to develop a proactive, inclusive organizational culture. Under the vision of "One Rutgers" and "One Libraries," the
AUL - New Brunswick will serve as a strategic leader within the unified Rutgers University Libraries as well as at Rutgers-New Brunswick to grow and position their team to best serve the many varied stakeholders while leveraging efficiencies across the Rutgers University Libraries system.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Provides data-driven, visionary leadership in planning, budgeting, and resource allocation to enhance local library facilities, services, and programs that enrich the academic experience for students and faculty at Rutgers-New Brunswick.
* Oversees personnel matters, including the recruitment, appointment, and evaluation of librarians and archivists, full-time staff, and student and hourly support staff.
* Manages an annual budget of over $7 million and maintenance of eight library facilities.
* Champions the professional growth and success of library faculty and staff through mentorship, training, and opportunities for advancement.
* Engages in organization-wide planning, budgeting, operational, and personnel decision-making activities to ensure alignment with the Libraries' and Rutgers University's goals and priorities.
* Advances Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (
DEIA) goals within the Libraries and the broader university community through proactive initiatives and policy advocacy.
* Acts as a vocal advocate for the Libraries' resources and services to university stakeholders and the broader community, fostering a strong sense of community and collaboration.
* Develops and maintains collaborative partnerships across Rutgers-New Brunswick through effective communication and leadership.
* Promotes Rutgers University Libraries' system-wide resources and services, as well as the libraries based at Rutgers-New Brunswick, to key stakeholders at Rutgers-New Brunswick and beyond, to ensure user needs are met.
* Represents the Libraries within the university, state, and national committees, advocating for the institution's interests and priorities.
The
AUL - New Brunswick is an administrator and faculty member who plays a key role in the appointment, reappointment, and promotion of library faculty and therefore must qualify for tenure on appointment. The successful candidate has a record of professional achievement through scholarly research relevant to academic librarianship, including publications, presentations, and participation and leadership in the work of relevant professional associations, particularly on the national level.
SALARY: Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Minimum salary: $170k.
STATUS/BENEFITS: Faculty status, calendar year appointment, retirement plans, life/health insurance, prescription drug and dental plans, tuition remission, and paid time off in accordance with university policy.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
A master's degree in library or information science from an
ALA-accredited institution. A strong record of leadership and accomplishment in an academic or research library setting with a minimum of five years of increasingly responsible administrative experience. Must qualify for tenure on appointment. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a library within a large, complex organization in a dynamic environment with the aim of serving the research and information needs of a diverse population of students and scholars. A clear understanding of the major challenges facing research university libraries in a time of complex and extended transition. A successful record of outreach and advocacy with library stakeholders. The ability to view issues from an institution-wide perspective, foster teamwork across departments and divisions, and stimulate cross-functional collaboration within the Libraries. Innovative approaches to problem-solving, proven success with budgeting and decision-making, ability to delegate effectively, effective oral and written communication skills, and a dedication to mentoring a diverse library faculty staff in the rapidly changing world of higher education.
