Director, Technology Engineering

WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY?

As Director of Engineering, you will be responsible for leading RBC Bank's engineering practice and a team of engineers driving a culture and mindset of engineering in order to solve complex business and technical issues and needs across the bank. This role will serve as the face of Engineering in order to deliver on business strategies while leveraging modern frameworks, principles, approach and tools.

The Director of Engineering will be accountable for the execution against the banks Design and Architecture, Front End Development, Back End Development, Service (API) Orchestration and Data Engineering. Solutions will be required to be developed with application and platform security, resiliency and scalability in mind providing industry leading digital services and experiences for a best in class leading digital bank.

The Direct of Engineering will be tasked with supporting key decisions around buy vs. build, transform vs. evolve and management of technical investments and debt over time. The role will serve as a pillar of RBC Bank's IT leadership team, working closely with Architecture, with frequent review of the technology operating model and approach to addressing technology and business needs over time.

This role will work with key business stakeholders providing leading and progressive ideas and concepts in order to support business and technology functions and objectives.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  • Drive technical solution evaluation & designs supporting rich and mature client products and experiences
  • Drive a team of technology engineers in support of UI/UX (Web/Mobile), Back End, Service Orchestration design and development
  • Positions and advocates for modern design and technology principles expanding the banks boundaries of technology adoption
  • Ensures the execution of technology solutions and designs meet regulatory and enterprise expectations and terms of use
  • Provide effective capacity management of team relative to demands of design and development (build)
  • Ensures safety and soundness of solutions through delivery with on-going responsibility and influence on solution effectiveness over time
  • Manages technology engineering as a cost center with a focus on resources, expertise, value of delivery as well as delivery throughput
  • Partners with business stakeholders to inform on product and service designs and solutions best positioned to support bank objectives
  • Works in concert with Technology Architecture, Technology Operations and Technology Risk functions to address cross concerns of responsibilities

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED?

Must have:

  • 5-7 years of Back-End & Front-End Development Experience
  • 3-5 years of Architectural Design Experience ,Data Engineering Experience and leading an Engineering Team
  • Rich experience with modern technology solutions including leading front end, back end and cloud service platforms
  • Deep experience in full stack engineering from back-end legacy environments through modern UX/UI delivery and simplification
  • Experience with data architecture, platforms and design and DevOPS and CI/CD principles
  • Industry understanding of front (Angular/React) and back-end development frameworks (Java & Spring)
  • Ability to research, understand and decide on key technology investments based on business/technical value and level of industry adoption
  • Ability to manage technology investments based on determinations of risk vs. reward

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience in a matrix environment, such as a large, publicly-traded corporation
  • Ability to facilitate between and influence key decision makers
  • Strategic thinker with excellent interpersonal skills to work across functions and businesses
