The role of the Principal AI Data Scientist is to help guide Provider Operations through the integration and optimization of artificial intelligence within our business. This individual will be part of a team that plays a crucial role in identifying opportunities for AI implementation, developing proof of concept solutions, and enhancing efficiency and productivity across various business functions.

The Principal AI Data Scientist will be instrumental in driving our organization's digital transformation efforts, leveraging AI to create a more efficient, innovative, and competitive business.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to understand current business processes and identify potential areas for AI integration within Provider Operations
  • Develop and implement cutting edge AI Proof of Concept solutions tailored to AI technology adoption, addressing both technical and cultural shifts
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across various departments to communicate the benefits of AI, address concerns, and secure buy-in for change initiatives
  • Work closely with data scientists and AI developers in IT teams to help ensure models are put into production in a manner that ensures safety, fairness, and robustness
  • Monitor the performance of implemented AI solutions, gathering feedback and making necessary adjustments to maximize effectiveness and ROI
  • Stay updated on the latest developments in AI, machine learning, and process mapping technologies to continuously improve the tools and methodologies used
  • Lead the planning and execution of AI projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within scope, and budget
  • Design and map business processes, ensuring they are optimized for AI implementation
  • Work closely with various departments and stakeholders to ensure buy-in and successful implementation of AI initiatives
  • Serve as a liaison between technical teams and business units, ensuring that AI solutions are aligned with business needs and integrated seamlessly
  • Mentor junior staff, help train team skills in AI best practices

Required Qualifications:



  • 8+ years of professional experience in a Data Science or AI focused role
  • Prior experience in data science, ideally with experience working with financial or healthcare-related data (e.g. pharmaceuticals, medical claims)
  • Solid proficiency in researching, interpreting, and analyzing diverse and complex data
  • Extensive data manipulation skills across structured and unstructured sources/repositories
  • Expert proficiency in SQL and Python
  • Effective project ownership, management, drive & delivery
  • Stakeholder management experience, dealing with multiple stakeholders, and forming effective partnerships
  • Solid business acumen, with the ability to strategically consult with the business with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely in writing and orally to individuals and groups
  • Ability to align technical innovation with business goals, ensuring the successful delivery of impactful AI products



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Certification in Six Sigma, Lean, TQM or Business Process Re-Engineering; process re-engineering experience in large, matrixed organization
  • Experience in healthcare industry
  • Solid project management skills, with experience supporting cross-functional teams and evaluating external vendors
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, comfortable with navigating ambiguity and scaling new products or services from the ground up
  • Proven experience in change management, preferably with a focus on technology adoption in large organizations
  • Experience with Generative AI and LLMs

The salary range for this role is $106,800 to $194,200 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with al minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
