Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) manages the 10-year, $2.1 billion Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract for the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management, Los Alamos Field Office.

N3B is a limited liability company owned by Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) Nuclear and BWX Technologies, joined by our critical subcontractors Longenecker and Associates and Tech2 Solutions.

Position Location:

This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position Summary:

N3B is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Director, Engineering for immediate employment in the Los Alamos, NM office. Great opportunity for a senior engineer with management experience who is ambitious and looking for a unique growth opportunity!

The successful candidate will function as a team leader over a diverse group of engineers and drafters that support projects, operations, and maintenance activities across N3B that includes non-reactor Category II facilities.

This position reports to the E&NS Program Manager.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

  • Ensure operational integration of functional units and assure effective interface with other N3B organizations, EM-LA, DNFSB, various stakeholder organizations (i.e., NMED, State Engineering, EPA, etc.) and corporate organizations.
  • Integrate information from a broad range of functional experts and provide strategic input to the E&NS PM.
  • Facilitate effective communications within the department.
  • Assure compliance with applicable DOE Orders, regulations, national codes and standards and laws related to departmental work scope.
  • Maintain visible commitment to achieving excellence in safety, health, and environmental practices.
  • Provide innovative solutions to complex problems that are based on best available technology, international state-of-the-art methods, processes and procedures.
  • Function as team leader of assigned projects to determine possible solutions to imminent operational, technical or administrative activities.
  • Analyze possible solutions, determining pros and cons, and presents recommendations to the E&NS PM.
  • Assist in tracking subcontract Period of Performance and funding; takes timely actions to ensure project needs are met.
  • May design processes to enhance project documentation workflow.
  • Prepare data and information into presentational material for the client and senior management.
  • Proficient in MS Office to include MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):

  • Due to the nature of the work, all candidates must be US Citizens.
  • Must have broad, experience-based knowledge of facility operations and engineering principles, methods and associated regulatory requirements.
  • Broad knowledge of company practices and policies, managerial practices, project management, scheduling, personnel supervision and development techniques.
  • High level of skill and ability to perform highly complex and critical tasks to solve problems.
  • Knowledge of DOE O 420.1C requirements for Nuclear Facilities.
  • Excellent ability to track and analyze subcontract costs and budgets.
  • Knowledge of contract policies, procedures, and DOE government regulations affecting contract management.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and follow-through to completion on multiple tasks.
  • Skilled in the preparation and formatting of correspondence, reports, and/or presentations.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills, including proofreading, grammar, spelling, punctuation, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to have an impact on organizational success and productivity, with independent judgment.
  • Ability to train and mentor more junior management and staff in areas of expertise.
  • Level of skill in language, mathematics, communication, reasoning, and computers necessary to perform essential functions of the job.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline with at least 14 years of relevant experience including DOE Nuclear Hazard Category 1 or 2 facility. Experience should include a minimum of 6 years of management responsibility. Must have 4 years of nuclear experience per DOE O 426.2.

Business Associations:

Interacts with senior management, and others concerning matters of significance to the company. Conducts business and technical briefings for senior and top management and for external representatives.

Impact:

Decisions have a serious impact on the overall success or failure on area of accountability. Erroneous decisions or recommendations may cause critical delays or modifications to company projects or operations causing substantial expenditure of time, human resources, and funds.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Physical requirements conducive to a normal office environment. Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the discipline. Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. May spend time in the field gathering data and monitoring environmental conditions firsthand. Field activities may require working in unfavorable weather conditions.

While working to achieve N3B LLCC objectives, the Director, Engineering will ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner to include protecting the confidentiality and integrity of Personally Identifiable Information (PII). This role will maintain required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; and make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.
