The
Radiation Oncology and
Emergency & Critical Care-Nephrology-Extracorporeal Therapies services are part of the
Department of Clinical Sciences (DoCS) within the
College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State University (NCSU-CVM).
Radiation Oncology at NCSU-CVM:
The
Radiation Oncology program focuses on
head and neck cancer biology and radiation biology in companion animals. Our research aims to
identify, characterize, and improve the understanding of head and neck cancers (melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma) in dogs and cats, with the goal of advancing both
veterinary patient care and translational research applicable to human medicine. We are also looking for radiation therapy as an alternative treatment options for non-cancerous oral diseases such as stomatitis.
Emergency & Critical Care-Nephrology-Extracorporeal Therapies at NCSU-CVM:
The
Emergency & Critical Care (ECC) service conducts
clinical and benchtop research on
life-threatening conditions, including:
- Respiratory diseases
- Fluid therapy optimization
Inflammatory conditions, such as sepsis
The
Nephrology-Extracorporeal Therapies service focuses on
kidney diseases and dialysis therapies, investigating novel approaches to
renal support, filtration techniques, and critical interventions for managing acute and chronic kidney conditions. |
Essential Job Duties |
This position will serve as a
medical laboratory technician within the
Emergency & Critical Care-Nephrology/Extracorporeal Therapies and Radiation Oncology team. A key focus will be
processing clinical trial specimens, data collection, performing RNA/protein extraction, and cell culture to support research initiatives.
Core Responsibilities:
Clinical Trial & Research Support:
- Communicate with pet owners regarding clinical trials and schedule appointments.
- Collect and process clinical specimens (e.g., blood, urine) for research.
- Maintain proper documentation and storage of diagnostic samples.
- Assist with patient monitoring device application for enrolled patients.
- Ensure accurate entry of test orders and results into the laboratory information system.
Laboratory Operations & Equipment Maintenance:
- Coordinate lab equipment and supply orders for clinical trials and ex-vivo studies.
- Perform and maintain cell culture, including routine maintenance, media preparation, and contamination control.
- Conduct RNA and protein extraction, reagent preparation, and PCR component setup.
- Assist with diagnostic and research testing as assigned.
- Train and delegate tasks to student workers.
- Maintain and service RNA/protein extraction machines and thermocyclers.
- Monitor assay quality and ensure proper documentation of equipment maintenance.
Data Collection & Analysis:
- Search medical records and compile data for case-series studies.
- Address discrepancies in data and investigate unusual test results.
- Report findings to lead team members for further analysis.
- Assist with advanced molecular biology techniques, including:
- Quantitative PCR
- Next-Generation Sequencing
- Probe-based real-time PCR
ELISA, immunofluorescent staining, and Western Blot

Responsibilities:
- Develop streamlined methods for RNA/protein extraction, testing, and documentation.
- Validate new testing methods and perform preliminary analysis beyond diagnostic samples.
- Identify and resolve sample processing issues, including preparing samples for specialized molecular diagnostic tests.
- Assist with creating, modifying, and documenting new standard operating procedures (SOPs) for workflow and diagnostic processes.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education |
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Regulations. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
- Exceptional communication skills and professional behavior including ability to communicate with others in laboratory and veterinary setting.
- Must have ability to follow bio-safety rules.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience or familiar with the following computer and software: Google Drives, Microsoft Office; Microsoft Excel; PRISM or other statistical analysis program (R, SAS), EzyVet, or other medical/laboratory information systems.
- Experience with the following laboratory techniques and equipment: cell culture, RNA/protein extraction, PCR, ELISA, Western Blot, immunofluorescent imaging; high-speed or ultracentrifugation.
- Experience with Next Generation Sequencing and/or nucleotide sequence analysis software.
- Experience interacting with veterinarians and scientists utilizing diagnostic services.
