Job Description

Torch Technologies, a 100% employee-owned business dedicated to providing superior research, development, and engineering services to the Department of Defense, is seeking a motivated and talented Junior Firmware Hardware Design Engineer to join our growing Technology Integration and Prototyping Center (TIPC) team.

Our electronics design team within TIPC specializes in the development, integration, and testing of advanced hardware solutions for aerospace and military systems, including manned/unmanned air and ground vehicles, missile systems, radars, and space applications. The selected candidate will contribute to the design and development of embedded systems from concept through integration, testing, and delivery.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for someone with 3+ years of experience in firmware and hardware design to work in a collaborative, technically driven environment, solving complex problems and contributing to mission-critical programs.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Design, develop, and optimize embedded firmware for microcontroller-based systems.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers to define system architecture and ensure seamless hardware-software integration.
  • Develop and maintain firmware for real-time embedded systems, including bootloaders, device drivers, and application-level code.
  • Implement and optimize communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, USB, CAN, and Ethernet.
  • Conduct debugging, testing, and validation of firmware to ensure system reliability and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Develop documentation for firmware architecture, design decisions, and test procedures.
  • Participate in system-level design reviews and provide technical input on hardware and firmware improvements.
  • Design, develop, modify, and evaluate complex hardware components and systems in support of embedded solutions.
  • Lead technical investigations involving new or modified material, component, or process specifications and requirements.
  • Contribute to and consolidate design elements across hardware development efforts for assigned projects.
  • Evaluate vendor capabilities as needed to support program requirements.
  • May provide work leadership and technical guidance to junior engineers or support personnel as needed.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in embedded firmware development.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret-level security clearance, US Citizenship is required.
  • Experience with FPGA programming (VHDL/Verilog) is a plus.
  • Experience with microcontrollers (ARM Cortex, PIC, AVR, etc.) and embedded development tools.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with RTOS-based and bare-metal firmware development.
  • Strong understanding of low-level hardware interfaces and debugging tools (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG, etc.).
  • Experience with version control systems (Git, SVN, etc.).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful integration of electrical systems.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience in PCB design and layout
  • Knowledge of wireless communication protocols (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LoRa, Zigbee) is desirable.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity best practices in embedded systems.
