Collection of medication histories involves interviewing patients, their families or caregivers to gather detailed information about current and past medications, including dosages and frequencies. An Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Technician is expected to collaborate with pharmacists, primary care providers and other sources to resolve discrepancies, ensuring comprehensive and reliable health records. Working closely with the emergency department care team you play a critical role in minimizing medication errors and supporting informed clinical decisions in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment. Maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to healthcare protocols are also essential aspects of your responsibilities.
In assisting the pharmacist and care team in emergency situations you will be expected to perform actions under their scope of practice as directed by the pharmacist, including but limited to, bedside compounding, removing medications from automated medication dispensing cabinets and responding to emergency situations (i.e. Code Blue, Stroke Alerts and Trauma Alerts)
Efficiency and Accuracy: Collect medication histories swiftly and precisely in a time sensitive environment Attention to Detail: Accurately document medication information Communication: Exhibit excellent communication skills while interacting with diverse patients and families Team Collaboration: Coordinate with pharmacist and ED staff to support patient care Adaptability: Navigate the fast-paced and unpredictable nature of the ED with a calm and solution-focused mindset Knowledge and Skills: Maintain a strong understanding of medications, brand/generic naming, common indications, IV sterile compounding competencies, and basic life support certification
What We Require:
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Successful completion of an approved Pharmacy Technician training course is preferred. Successful completion of Pharmacy Service Line competencies within 6 months of hire.
Experience: Previous pharmacy work experience is preferred. One year of pharmacy experience required for Registrar I.
Licensure, certification, and/or registration:Registration with the Virginia Department of Health Professionals required.Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician is required within 9 months of hire
Other Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to maintain familiarity with a large number (1000-2000) of medications and focused on attention to detail/accuracy. Must be customer service oriented. Requires knowledge and use of general office equipment and procedures, including computer/keyboard. Must be able to solve simple mathematical and logistical problems in the work environment. Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision. All Technicians must complete Orientation Competencies.
