Overview

The College Utilities Corporation team has an opportunity for a Utility Operator. The position is responsible for performing operations and maintenance on water and wastewater utility infrastructure as well as construction of new water mains and sewer mains and associated infrastructure.

Work Location and Schedule

This position will travel between service areas near Fairbanks, Alaska. Schedule is Monday through Friday. After-hour and weekend on-call support may be required.

What You'll Do

  • Perform preventative maintenance on water and wastewater utility infrastructure.
  • Perform general mechanical overhaul and repair work on fire hydrants, circulating stations, gate valves, lift stations, pumps, and motors.
  • Perform basic electrical troubleshooting and maintenance at lift station and circulating station control panels.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as dozers, excavators, and vactor trucks.

What You'll Bring

Experience

  • Three years' experience in the repair and overhaul of automotive or diesel equipment; or substituting successful completion of technical school training in gasoline or diesel engine repair for the work experience; or substituting completion of a recognized apprenticeship program in the automotive mechanical field.

Education

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Possess a valid State of Alaska Driver's License.
  • The selected candidate must obtain and maintain a valid State of Alaska Commercial Driver's License within one (1) year of hire.
  • The selected candidate must obtain the required ADEC certifications for the level rating of the utilities within four (4) years of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment and technology used in the repair and maintenance of any mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical principals.
  • Knowledge of the occupational and environmental hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trade.
  • Knowledge of the principles of pumps and motors.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems.
  • Experience and ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical failures.
  • Experience and ability to comprehend technical inspections to repair manuals.
  • Experience and ability to perform repairs to motorized equipment.
  • Experience and ability to weld, fabricate and modify equipment.
  • Skill in locating and repairing defects in motorized equipment.
  • Experience and ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions and interpret plans and sketches.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment and materials of the mechanical trade.
  • Skill in locating and repairing defects in automotive equipment.
  • Pump and lift station maintenance.
  • Maintains and completes recordkeeping for water and sewer equipment.
  • Position is responsible for utility maintenance.
  • Repair of utility mains.
  • Ability to work with the general public to solve conflicts.

Work Environment

  • Capable of lifting a minimum of 50 pounds above waist height (3 feet or higher).
  • Able to work in cramped, uncomfortable spaces with low light conditions.
  • Exhibit physical dexterity to work in awkward positions for up to one hour at a time.
  • Able to lift, pull or push for a significant portion of a workday.
  • Able to perform duties while standing, stooping, twisting, bending, kneeling or from prone position for up to an hour at a time.
  • Capable of extending arms overhead for extended periods of time while performing duties.
  • Able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions such as cold and snow for a significant portion of a workday.
  • Capable of working in an environment where raw sewage is present.
  • Capable of working in either a crew environment or independently as required.
