Position Highlights |
Dr. Jesse Alston, Assistant Professor with the School of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of Arizona, located in Tucson, Arizona is looking to hire a Researcher/Scientist III (Scientist, Wildlife Research) who will conduct wildlife research, including fieldwork, statistical analysis, and dissemination of findings. The Researcher/Scientist III will play a supervisory role under the research group's PI, particularly of undergraduate students and technicians. A small portion of their responsibilities, the Researcher/Scientist III will provide administrative support for research activities across Dr. Alston's research group, including training personnel, regulator compliance, and grant administration. Initial work will focus on camera trapping in southern Arizona. This position requires long hours outdoors where the Researcher/Scientist III may be subject to extreme heat conditions. This includes transporting 20lbs of equipment several miles across variable terrain. Duties & Responsibilities |
- Oversee day-to-day operation of research
projects: coordinate and conduct fieldwork and data and equipment management, plan and lead work of lower-level staff performing project responsibilities, maintain adherence to standard operating procedures for the research group, create and deliver training materials. - Develop, design, and conduct small to moderately
complex research projects. Develop new techniques, methods, or equipment as required by projects. Make recommendations for improvement of project management and research procedures. - Serve as project liaison with campus and community partners. Contribute
to ensuring/maintaining regulatory compliance of research group as required. - Initiate and write grant proposals to secure research funding.
- Under the supervision of Principal Investigator (PI), author and present research results at meetings or conferences as well as project reports for funding agencies/groups.
Participate in authoring peer-reviewed publications.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
- Ability to communicate effectively with different
groups/individuals. - In-depth knowledge of current camera trap image data
management and processing procedures. - Ability to coordinate research activities
in a university setting. - Knowledge of IACUC and occupational safety regulations regarding safe and humane animal research.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
- Ability to work in an outdoor environment in extreme heat.
- Ability to lift up to 20lbs.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Zoology or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience working with Timelapse image processing software and the Camera Trap Data Package standard.
- Experience with previously having written grant applications for federal funding opportunities.
- Experience authoring and presenting research findings at national scientific conferences.
