Job Overview:

The Internal Medicine Clinical Specialist is responsible for the provision of pharmaceutical care to all patient age groups, with emphasis on geriatric and adult population. They are responsible for providing all levels of pharmacy clinical services within their assigned specialization area. The Clinical Specialists is responsible for assisting the Director of Pharmacy and Assistant Director of Clinical Services in the coordination and supervision of all Clinical Pharmacy activities in addition to the Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance activities relating to the provision of Pharmaceutical Care. He or she plans, organizes, analyzes and compiles the hospital's drug utilization programs as required and assists in the implementation of cost containment programs. He or she furnishes clinical information to physicians, pharmacy personnel, and other health care professionals and patients. He or she serves to support the clinical activities of the clinical generalists.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Registration in New Jersey as a Pharmacist in good standing.

  • Current New Jersey licensure required.

  • Hospital Pharmacy experience required with good interpersonal relationship skills.

  • Familiarity with all phases of Hospital Pharmacy. Working knowledge of health care matters.

  • Understanding of role of the Pharmacy Department within the Hospital, it s interrelationship with other departments and functions. Successful completion of all orientations.

  • Position requires completion of a PGY1 residency and some specialties will require a PGY2 specialty residency with examples as in pediatrics, oncology.

Preferred:

Certifications and Licenses Required (if applicable):

  • Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy and/or Ambulatory Care Pharmacy
  • Experience in Transitions of Care pharmacy practice

Essential Functions:

  • Participates in direct patient care activities
  • Educates healthcare professionals to ensure the safe and effective use of medications in systems and or populations.
  • Serves as an effective preceptor for the PGY1 pharmacy residency program
  • Establishes rapport and builds effective working relationships with other health care team members.
  • Follows, maintains, and reinforces the pharmacy and hospital s medication use policies and processes to ensure proper and safe dosing, storage, handling, dispensing, and or administration of medications.
  • Provides a compassionate and supportive environment with prompt and consistent service
  • Adheres to patient rights: provides for the confidential treatment of all communications and records.
  • Demonstrates professionalism with families, visitors, physicians, co-workers and supervisors.
  • Listens and communicates effectively
  • Supports teamwork by cooperative problem solving through participation in meetings, projects, etc.
  • Quality Performance Improvement
  • Utilizes principles of continuous quality improvement in all work situations to assess, measure and improve organizational and department functions
  • Organizes work sets priorities with a minimum of supervision and seeks guidance as appropriate
  • Makes decisions that are timely and consistent with department, objectives, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment; accepts and benefits from constructive criticism
  • Participates in ongoing education as required.
