Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Chemistry Department is one of the largest and most complex departments in the College of Arts & Sciences. There are 42 faculty members, 39
SHRA positions, 230 graduate students, 50 postdoctoral research associates, 400 undergraduate majors, and an annual total of ca. 10,000 registrations by all students in classroom and laboratory courses. The Department is housed in three buildings with 287,000 sq. feet of space. The department's teaching faculty participate in teaching assignments which involve an average of 200 students per class per semester. The majority of faculty are research active, in addition to supervision of graduate students working on their Masters or Ph.D. degrees, undergraduate students carrying out independent research and honors programs, research technicians and postdoctoral research associates. Primarily the research is funded by federal and private agencies such as
NSF,
NIH, Army, Navy,
DOE,
PRF. and involves expenditures of more than thirteen million dollars annually. A total of over thirty-two million dollars from all sources is expended annually in the Department. The National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center for Environmentally Responsible Solvents and Processes and the Institute for Advanced Materials have separate administrative structures but depend administratively on the Chemistry department. |
Position Summary |
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy.
UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The primary purpose of this advanced administrative position is to provide office support for all faculty in the Chemistry department. The faculty administrative support team reports directly to the Admin Team Leader. Each faculty administrative support role performs specific responsibilities for all faculty members in the department. Each support person is expected to provide similar and consistent support to each professor and their research groups. This is one of the largest departments on campus and high-level support is required.
This role is one of three administrative associates in the department. Each person has different responsibilities, and everyone is cross trained to support one another. This role is the lead for travel training and processing for students, post docs, faculty and staff in the unit. Systems used include Concur,
RASR, Web Travel and
CABS. The role provides technical troubleshooting support to faculty in these systems and takes initiative to train new faculty on Chemistry submission processes. They are cross trained in accounts payable for Chemistry including processing vouchers, independent contractors, reimbursements, purchase orders, T&E card reconciliation, and purchasing card reconciliation for requests critical to labs and faculty research. This position will provide complex system support to faculty, post docs and students in Concur and Web Travel. This person will interpret and apply policy to travel and accounts payables. This position provides academic support with copying exams, may assist in training temporary employees, provides event support, and shares parking coordinator responsibilities. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. |

Preferred candidate will have prior experience in higher education, accounts payables, travel systems, and working in an office setting. |

Physical effort required for the position includes, but not limited to: standing and bending for extended periods of time during events and lifting/moving up to 25 pounds including tables, chairs, and catering supplies. |
