During the probationary period, employee appointments remain at-will, and employees may be separated from employment during probation without the protections of the disciplinary policy and without coverage under most provisions of the grievance policy.
Those who have completed Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certification must have worked at least 12 continuous months in a permanent position to satisfy the probation requirement.
Employees who have not completed BLET at the time of hire into an EHRA LEO position must have worked at least 24 continuous months in a permanent position and must have completed BLET training certification to satisfy the probation requirement.

Position Summary |
The primary location of this position is on the main Cullowhee, NC campus.
Position serves as the unit supervisor and provides direct supervision to subordinate officers. This position may be assigned as a patrol operations supervisor, criminal investigation supervisor, or and administrative function supervisor. Other duties to be performed when not engaged in supervisory duties, include but are not limited to: responds to calls for service or crimes, investigates violations of law of university rules, prepares written reports on serious incidents or as required, enforces parking and traffic rules, engages in crowd and traffic control, patrols and inspects buildings and facilities for safety or security concerns, coordinates with higher authority on special traffic, law enforcement, or safety concerns; conducts monthly evaluations of subordinates' performance; performs related duties as directed; enters shift data into a computer and performs extensive work in computer applications such as word processing, database, and spreadsheets; provides training for the shift, including documentation of such training; coordinates with Lieutenant for the provision of any special services; assists in the field training of new recruits; makes appropriate assignment of shift employees according to the needs of the department; serves on university committees as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for this Position include:
Knowledge of NC criminal and motor vehicle laws and understanding their application; knowledge of federal laws, particularly those that apply to a higher education institution including
FERPA and the Clery Act; knowledge of general court and criminal processes; knowledge of police training practices and crime prevention issues; knowledge of Departmental General Orders; knowledge of investigative techniques; knowledge of the chain-of-custody and processing procedures for evidence; knowledge of safety, crime prevention, and crime mapping principles; skilled in working with a diverse population; skilled in public service contact with a customer orientation; skilled in working in a regimented work environment that requires giving and following orders; skilled in working with computer applications; skilled in working within all facets of University law enforcement; skilled in working with instructional and technical equipment; ability to write legibly and coherently; ability to speak clearly and distinctly over the radio and telephone; ability to communicate effectively with other including public speaking; ability and skill in motor vehicle operation; ability to use physical force to control individuals or defend one's self or others; ability to carry or drag a person with a weight range of 125 to 175 lbs; ability to climb through windows or similar size openings; ability to climb up and over obstacles; ability to walk up and down five flights of stairs; ability to crawl in confined areas, e.g., attics, crawl spaces; ability to grip objects tightly; ability to drag or push heavy objects; ability to jump across ditches or culverts; ability to lift heavy objects that weigh 75 or more pounds; ability to carry an adult on a stretcher; ability to pull an adult from a confined space such as the interior of a vehicle; ability to run 110 yards over a variety of terrain; ability to walk continuously for four or more hours; ability to stand continuously for four or more hours; ability to sit continuously for four or more hours; ability to read and comprehend document, polices, directives, and text-based electronic media. |
Minimum Qualifications |
A minimum of an associate degree (or 60 hours of college credit) and 4 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. Current certification from NC
CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe.
Must be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship. |
