Job Overview

The Medical Interpreter, Sr. is responsible for performing full level interpretation and translation work while providing training and mentoring to less experienced or junior interpreters in the related principles, methods and techniques related to interpretation and translation.

Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience: Spoken and written fluency in Spanish, English or other foreign language with a minimum of a combination of three (3) years of translation/interpretation experience.
  • Certification(s): Certified as a Bridging the Gap (BTG) Medical Interpreter or equivalent is required at the


Responsibilities

POPULATION SPECIFIC CARE

No direct patient care, but will provide interpretive services to patients and families of all ages.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

  • Provides full level interpretation services for patients, families, associates and staff.
  • Provides full translation services including discharge instructions and other documents as assigned by the department.
  • Mentors junior interpreters during pre-arranged training sessions with focus on helping them to becoming linguistically and culturally responsive.
  • Participates in evaluations of new hires by providing feedback and observations to the manager.
  • Assists the department manager in completing assessments on ongoing training and overall interpretation or translation processes.
  • Participates in department programs or assigned projects as applicable.
  • Maintains competency with medical terminology by specialty.
  • Utilizes the hospital's electronic medical record system and trains junior interpreters in it use, including documentation regarding appointments, accessing patient medical records, provide statistics and other duties specific to the department.

SCOPE AND LEVEL

  • Guidelines: Guidelines are generally but not always clearly applicable, requiring the employee to exercise judgment in selecting the most pertinent guideline, interpret precedents, adapt standard practices to differing situations, and recommend alternative actions in situations without precedent.
  • Complexity: Duties assigned are generally complex and may be of substantial intricacy. Work assignment is performed within an established framework under general instructions but requires simultaneous coordination of assigned functions or projects in various stages of completion.
  • Decision Making: Exercises judgment and discretion, and is responsible for determining the time, place and sequence of the work performed.
  • Communications: Contacts with the public or employees where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, defended, and gathered and discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function.
  • Supervision Received: Performs work with minimal supervisory oversight. Under general supervision, the employee receives assignments and is expected to carry them through to completion with substantial independence. Recurring work clearly covered by guidelines may or may not be reviewed.

Salary Information
Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.

Hourly Range: $23.31 to $34.97
