Job Summary

Under general supervision, provide animal husbandry and general housekeeping in the vivarium. Routinely handle live mice. Identify and act upon animal health issues, following Standard Operating Procedures. Perform basic operator equipment maintenance and repair. Transport supplies throughout the Mouse Biology Program Facility and campus. Assist other vivarium personnel with laboratory duties. Work in animal housing and laboratory areas up to Biosafety Level 2.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • No minimal education required.
  • Experience handling live animals.
  • Skills to identify and report sick animals.
  • Skills to perform basic husbandry tasks, including cage changes and facility maintenance, and to maintain biosecurity across multiple housing areas.
  • Understanding of basic rodent biology and reproduction, including normal physiology and breeding practices.
  • Skills to work with computerized databases and coordinate & maintain vivarium records.
  • Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to work effectively on a team and interact by phone, writing, electronic mail email, or in person in a culturally diverse working environment.
  • Ability to follow instructions and perform highly specific procedures according to prescribed SOP's and animal care standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AALAS Certification (ALAT or higher).
  • Experience handling live rodents/mice strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in a high health status barrier vivarium.
  • Experience performing basic procedures such as restraint, oral dosing, administration of medication, and/or injections.
  • Experience with a colony management database system, automated cage card equipment and software.

Department Overview

The Mouse Biology Program (MBP) is an interdisciplinary group of scientists and staff from the Schools of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine and the College of Biological Sciences, with administrative and intellectual oversight provided by the Center for Comparative Medicine. This interdisciplinary group focuses on expanding knowledge on the biology of the laboratory mice and on the application of genetically altered mice in biomedical research. The MBP offers coordinated expertise in mouse biology from concept through creation and supports state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, services and mouse vivarium to provide an enriched environment for students, trainees, and investigators utilizing genetically altered mice in research.

Work with and routinely handle live mice in a research setting. This position may, at times, require employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials (may include biohazards, chemical hazards, and radioactive material) are present, up to and including BSL2 level work. Must possess a valid California driver's license to drive campus owned vehicles between campus locations. Work flexible hours, occasional overtime, and holidays. There is restricted vacation during peak holiday times. This position will require working at least one weekend day as part of the routine work schedule. This position requires that the employee must not own any rodent pets in the home or own any pets that require the feeding of live rodents. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
