Engineering a world of possibilities
The Partial Differential Equations and Kinetic Theory group within the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at the Colorado School of Mines is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work on a variety of analytic and computational projects to study the behavior of collisionless plasmas.
Potential projects include identification of the large time behavior or study of the global regularity of solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson and Vlasov-Maxwell systems describing multispecies plasmas, as well, as large-scale HPC simulations concerning the stability of solutions to these fundamental models. The successful candidate's responsibilities may involve theoretical, methodological, technical, and computational developments, in addition to applications. The position shall begin in August 2025 and continue for one year with a potential extension of another 1-2 years upon satisfactory progress. Primary Responsibilities
  • Using tools from a broad spectrum of applied and computational mathematics, including Applied PDEs, Applied Analysis, and Numerical Methods to solve PDEs, in order to deduct information and establish precise theorems concerning the well-posedness and asymptotic behavior of solutions to PDE models from Kinetic Theory
  • Collaborating with the Applied PDEs research group, including with other postdoctoral researchers, as well as graduate and undergraduate students at Mines, via online and in-person group meetings
  • Participating in grant-writing and annual reports
  • Writing manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and presenting results at (inter)national conferences and workshops
  • Teaching 1-2 courses per year in classes consistent with expertise, previous experience, and pedagogical interest


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • PhD degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, or a related field


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience with, as well as outstanding promise and/or excellent accomplishments, in research devoted to PDEs, applied analysis, and/or applied and computational mathematics
  • Interest in interdisciplinary efforts
  • Commitment to and experience in teaching and/or mentoring student research
  • Strong communication (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills for collaborative work


Preferred Qualifications
Education and Experience:
  • Experience with mathematical proofs of theorems related to the well-posedness, stability, and asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson, Vlasov-Maxwell, or Boltzmann equations
  • Experience with (i) numerical methods to solve PDEs and methods of uncertainty quantification, (ii) programing with MATLAB, C++, or Python, and (iii) high-performance computing
  • Open-source code development and maintenance (i.e., GitHub repositories)
  • Previous experience teaching at the undergraduate level

Annual Rate

$60,000 - $70,000 per year
