JOB TITLE:

Laboratory Technician III - Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory

JOB PURPOSE:

Manage the operations of a designated laboratory; perform advanced diagnostic/research tests and services with complex analysis and interpretation of data; teach lab classes; train and supervise undergraduate and graduate students. Assist in managing the daily operations of the Regulatory Serology laboratory.

Responsibilities include:
  • Performing time-sensitive diagnostic testing required for the movement of animals within and across the state of Wyoming.
  • Ensuring quality control (QC) and accurate reporting of diagnostic results.
  • Tracking laboratory spending to ensure efficient resource management.
  • Improving test turnaround time through efficient workflows and communication with veterinary clients, the State Veterinary Office, and USDA animal health officials.
  • Training and supervising undergraduate and graduate students while maintaining operational excellence.
  • Cross-training in other laboratory sections, with a particular focus on the Diagnostic Serology laboratory, to provide flexible support across the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory (WSVL).
  • Perform and pass proficiency testing as part of ongoing laboratory accreditation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manage and direct the daily operations of a designated laboratory.
  • Perform tests, analyze and interpret results of data collected or received from outside agencies or institutions.
  • Operate, maintain and repair highly complex research instruments/equipment.
  • Communicate results of diagnostic/research testing with internal and external clients.
  • Discuss issues of concern with internal and external clients such as impact on the surrounding areas.
  • Determine or develop appropriate advanced research methods and procedures to accomplish required goals.
  • Develop and maintain quality control procedures to ensure accuracy of results.
  • Instruct faculty, staff and students in the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment; assist and instruct users in the interpretation of results.
  • Design and implement diagnostic/research laboratory procedures for which precedents do not exist.
  • May teach designated laboratory or related course work, such as PATH 4050, PATH 4200, PATH 5505, lab management, or special problems.
  • Perform and pass proficiency testing as part of ongoing laboratory accreditation.

Laboratory Operations Management:
  • Ensure all activities align with laboratory standards and accreditation requirements.
  • Track laboratory expenses and monitor account usage to optimize spending.
  • Work with WSVL finance and the WSVL Director to manage inventory purchases and oversee grant expenditures to align with budgetary and programmatic goals.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot research and diagnostic equipment to ensure consistent operations.

Diagnostic Testing and Quality Control:
  • Perform diagnostic tests on serum samples, interpreting and analyzing data to provide accurate results.
  • Implement and maintain quality control procedures to ensure high standards of accuracy and reliability.
  • Improve turnaround times for tests by streamlining workflows and prioritizing efficient communication.
  • Maintain records, complete laboratory forms, and finalize reports while adhering to strict QC practices.

Client and Stakeholder Communication:
  • Communicate diagnostic test results to veterinary clients, the State Veterinary Office, and USDA animal health officials via phone and email.
  • Address client inquiries and concerns, providing professional guidance and support.

Training and Supervision:
  • Train and supervise undergraduate and graduate students in diagnostic techniques and laboratory procedures.

Cross-Section Support:
  • Provide backup support for other laboratory sections within the WSVL, with an emphasis on tests performed in the Diagnostic Serology laboratory.

Reporting and Compliance:
  • Compile and submit monthly and quarterly testing reports for regulatory and disease-specific monitoring.
  • Perform and pass proficiency testing as part of ongoing laboratory accreditation.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Maintain records, complete laboratory forms, reports, and bill clients for services performed.
  • Maintain inventory and purchase laboratory supplies.
  • Participate in method development and research project design(s).
  • Assist in billing clients for services performed and maintaining accurate records.
  • Participate in method development and research project design to advance laboratory capabilities.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the United States, as sponsorship for work authorization or work visas is not available for this position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor's degree

Experience: 2 years work-related experience

Required licensure, certification, registration, or other requirements:
  • Requires hazardous materials shipping certification and re-certification after employed.
  • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Background in Veterinary or Animal Science.
  • Proficiency in diagnostic laboratory techniques, including serological assays (ELISA, FPA, BAPA).
  • Skilled in the use of micropipettes and computer-controlled scientific instruments.
  • Experience with data analysis using spreadsheet software.
  • Collaborative team experience with a focus on professionalism and communication.
  • Flexibility to accommodate high sample volume and dynamic scheduling needs.
