Job Summary

The Senior Director of Development occupies a key position in UCSF's Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) and in the School Development team. He/she will manage a comprehensive fundraising program and manage fundraising staff comprised of both professionals and related administrative support. In collaboration with the Executive Director, School Development, the Senior Director of Development provides strategic leadership and oversight of the major and principal gifts program for the School of Dentistry and Pharmacy. He/she provides guidance to team members to achieve goals in accordance with established policies and partners with university leaders, faculty/physicians, staff, and volunteers to grow philanthropic support. The Senior Director of Development reviews and approves recommendations for functional programs, and manages personal donor/prospect portfolio. He/she serves as a leadership thought partner for the School Development team.

Within the first month, you will be establishing rapport with the Schools team and faculty partners in Dentistry and Pharmacy and meet key partners throughout UDAR and UCSF. In addition, you will learn from your manager and other UDAR colleagues about UCSF's mission, culture, and fundraising priorities, as well as receive training on UDAR systems, policies, and practices. You will also assemble an initial portfolio of donors and prospects in collaboration with the Prospect Development team.

After six months you will be (i) engaging directly with donors and prospects in the respective Schools (ii) regularly partnering with key faculty leaders on gift strategies and opportunities, (iii) leading and providing leadership for the School Dev vertical to ensure success with a comprehensive understanding of top/key fundraising priorities, and (iv) familiar with UCSF and Schools structure, practices and policies.

By the end of the first year, you will have established yourself as a leader with the Schools team, key UDAR partner with the respective Deans, and had multiple donor meetings (virtual or in person), engaged in fundraising opportunities for the Schools and UCSF. You will also have been successfully positioned as principal and major gifts expert and strategy partner for the School of Dentistry and Pharmacy. You will be thoroughly conversant with the respective Schools and UCSF fundraising priorities, challenges, and opportunities and have worked closely with external and internal partners to strategize, solicit, and close a number of meaningful gifts.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $153,000 - $232,200 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Foundation and the Office of University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) are responsible for fostering and strengthening the campus outreach efforts to UCSF constituents and for garnering private support for the campus and the Medical Center. In raising private support, UDAR identifies, qualifies, solicits and stewards donors for the schools, medical centers, departments and programs on campus; accepts and administers all private gifts to the university through The Regents or the UCSF Foundation; and manages all alumni relations activities, campus support group activities and campus events. The UDAR office staffs the UCSF Foundation. The office is also responsible for the design and implementation of fundraising campaigns for UCSF

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
• 10+ years related work experience to include fundraising roles of increasing responsibility
• Expert working knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques
• Expert knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
• Expert written and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies. Expert skills in making persuasive and compelling presentations of goals and objectives for a location in order to secure gifts
• Expert organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills. Expert project / program management skills, including skills in setting and meeting program / project goals and objectives within budget and time constraints
• Expert level skills in maintaining confidentiality

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in higher education / healthcare/ non-profit fundraising
• Expert knowledge of all aspects of the location, including current issues of concern for both the campus and / or throughout higher education / healthcare, generally. Expert knowledge of the location, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure
• Knowledge of UCSF, UCSF Health, and related entities, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure
• Demonstrated leadership and management skills, including skills to oversee, coach, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff
