Position Description

McKesson Enterprise Data and Platform Engineering team is searching for a highly motivated individual to fill the role of Director, Platform Engineering. This person will play a crucial role in meeting the growing demands of our Enterprise Data Platforms.

As Director, you will lead a team of engineers who are responsible for delivering an exceptional platform engineering service for our data and analytics development teams. The ideal candidate will have the ability to transform ambiguous problems into practical solutions. They should be able to connect abstract concepts to business challenges and leverage technical debt to create strategic opportunities for our company. Collaboration with leaders from various business units, functions, and departments will be key in supporting and implementing data-driven decisions of the highest quality. You will also collaborate with Data Analytics, Data Science, Data Engineers, Software Engineers, Privacy, and Security teams to ensure seamless coordination in our endeavors.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Team Management:

  • Lead and mentor a team of engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
  • Provide guidance, support, and coaching to team members to ensure individual and team goals are met.
  • Manage performance evaluations, career development, and succession planning for the team.

Technology Strategy And Execution

  • Develop and implement a strategic roadmap for technology initiatives within the CI/CD pipelines & Container platform domains.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into technology solutions that enhance employee experience.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies to continuously improve and innovate our platform technology offerings.

Self-Service And Automation

  • Drive initiatives to enable self-service capabilities and automation across all supported technology areas.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes, reduce manual efforts, and increase efficiency through automation.
  • Champion the adoption of self-service tools and platforms to empower employees to resolve issues independently.

Vendor Management And Partnerships

  • Manage relationships with technology vendors and service providers, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Evaluate vendor performance, negotiate contracts, and drive value-added partnerships to support our technology initiatives.
  • Lead and coordinate Enterprise License Agreements with vendors including Tableau, Snowflake, Databricks, IBM, Microsoft and others.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Typically requires 12+ years of professional experience and 4+ years of management experience.

Critical Skills:

  • Proven experience in a technical and people leadership role with a focus on DevOps tooling and practices

  • 12+ years of experience, with 5+ years managing Azure based big data solutions; Experience with cloud data platforms is required

  • Hands-on experience working with and Mastery of CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, including their configuration, customization, and integration capabilities in progressively challenging roles.

  • Strong proficiency in scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or Groovy for automation and customization of CI/CD workflows.

  • Experience in seamlessly integrating containerization into CI/CD pipelines, including Docker image building, registry management, and container orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes, AKS, Azure DevOps including cluster setup, configuration, and management.

  • Strong working knowledge and hands on experience with Microsoft Azure including Functions, Databricks, ADLS, and others

  • Proficiency in infrastructure automation tools like Terraform, for provisioning and managing CI/CD infrastructure.

Additional Experience:

  • Demonstrates an ability to establish relationships and build rapport in order to influence colleagues at all levels, uncover business or technical issues, and facilitate their resolution.

  • Demonstrates the importance of celebrating wins and understanding opportunities to the managers they support

  • Excels in all facets of verbal and written communication; leads and inspires the team via open communication, effective listening, and strong collaborative networks; has excellent negotiation skills, is an expert coordinator, and has an ability to orchestrate change through influence.

  • Works effectively in the face of stress, ambiguity, difficult situations, and shifting priorities all while championing the long-term architectural view; understands the need to shift focus and priorities as required and successfully leads others through periods of change.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science) or equivalent experience

This is determined by several factors, including performance, experience and skills, equity, regular job market evaluations, and geographical markets. The pay range shown below is aligned with McKesson's pay philosophy, and pay will always be compliant with any applicable regulations. Our Base Pay Range for this position

$142,500 - $237,500
